Birmingham Small Business Week: Supporting Local Businesses

The week of April 29th to May 3rd is Birmingham Small Business week. Events are being held throughout the week to help support and connect small business owners to needed resources.

According to the Birmingham Business Alliance (BBA) the presence of small businesses are growing across the area. The organization cites around 30,000 active small businesses in the Birmingham-Hoover many of which are finding more stability coming into 2024.

Victor Brown, the Director of Small Businesses with the BBA, says back in 2020-2021 many businesses were forming and getting there footing. Many of which did not have the resources or information to sustain their business. Fast forward to 2023, Brown says, “2023 was a bit tougher. The sustainability for the companies that we work, many of them had a decline in jobs.”

Workforce availability and capital finances were two of the major struggles noted by the BBA. Brown says now business owners are making adjustments to maintain sustainability.

Brown says today finding long term employees can still be an issue for small business. “Businesses was an employee with 5-7 years of experience which is a better type employee to maintain and grow. Someone that has experience. Where as your early stage entry level employee may come into a small business work for a few years and then they can jump ship and get a big increase in pay working for a larger organization,” said Brown.

Some like Selena Rodgers Dickerson, owner of SARCOR LLC began offering virtual work options to employees who needed it.

“Newer employees may want to work remotely more. We have to make sure they’re trained and have the tools that they need. We’re trying to use the technology and the things that exist and incorporate them to how we can create new models of how we do things,” said Dickerson.

Other businesses have prioritized securing capital finances for their businesses. Including long term investments and loans.

The BBA has a number of resources available for small businesses looking to sustain or grow.
