AI Legalese Decoder: Assisting with the Process of Loan Discharge

Today, I received the long-awaited physical letter from my loan servicer, informing me that my loans are finally being discharged! This news has left me feeling incredibly relieved and ecstatic. After going through a review process that took approximately two months, I can now proudly say that I am completely debt-free for the first time in my adult life.

However, upon logging into my loan provider’s system, I noticed that the approval for the discharge is not yet reflected there. just wanted to let everyone know what my Senator emailed me about this program.

Thank you for taking the time to contact me about total and permanent disability discharge (TPD). As your senator, itÔÇÖs important for me to hear about the issues that matter to you. Please accept my apology for the delay in response.

I appreciate hearing of your interest in the tax treatment of student loan debt forgiven under the Total and Permanent Disability Discharge (TPD) program. In most cases, federal tax law treats debt forgiveness as income subject to tax.  However, there are several exceptions. In 2017, as part of the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, a provision was added to exclude from income student loan debt forgiven under the TPD  program. ***However, this and many other provisions of 2017 tax law are scheduled to expire at the end of 2025.  This means that, unless extended, student loan debt forgiven after 2025 as part of the TPD*** **program will once again be taxable.**  As a strong supporter of the 2017 tax law, I support making the tax relief provided under this law permanent.

Thank you again for taking the time to contact me. I value your input and ask that you please keep in touch.

    ┬á Sincerely,┬á Chuck Grassley – IOWA

How did you rack up 88k for an associates degree?

  • jeepdawg

Just a tip, Navient will also discharge their private student loans with 100%, you just need to contact them directly.

i don’t think Parent PLus qualifies IF it’s for your kid. This is from a .gov site
    [https://studentaid.gov/help-center/answers/article/loan-forgiveness-supporting-disabled-individual](https://studentaid.gov/help-center/answers/article/loan-forgiveness-supporting-disabled-individual)

Parent PLUS Loans are eligible for total and permanent disability discharge if the parent borrower, not the student for whom you borrowed, is totally and permanently disabled.

if I mis-understood then PLEASE explain to me and rest of us?

    Professional tip:

Prioritize investing into your future. Fully fund your employer 401k and then a Roth IRA. I’m still working on that 100 (stuck at 90%), but I’m a financial advisor and cannot stress enough how golden of an opportunity you have to really set up your future life.

Edit: Sorry this is unrelated to the questions you asked!

  • gigi_2018

Mine were listed as closed on my credit report within a couple of weeks of getting my approval letter. ItÔÇÖs so such a great feeling!!

  • Chillasupfly

What if you havenÔÇÖt used your loan discharge. You decide to go back to school and take out loans.. can you still get the one time loan discharge at 100 P&T?

  • Nimik1232

Took a few months for mine to fall off credit report

  • chefboiortiz

I hate to say this, but itÔÇÖs tempting to run up my loans before I get them discharged. Just to head ahead in life money wise, or maybe not even ahead just caught up.

  • Mexzkn

    How did you manage this?

  • Waste-Property-3162

What number do you have to call?

  • Such-Bad9765

I’m 100% PT. I’m currently in school using VR&E, so I have no debt. However, my wife does. If I transfer her student debt in my name, could I do a one-time forgiveness? I doubt I’d be allowed to do this, but figured I’d ask!

    UPDATE:

Well, most of the 100+ comments were absolutely unnecessary and wholly unhelpful … and in some cases quite rude. Some of y’all need to chill. In any case, if you want something done right might as well do it yourself.

For those curious in the future here is the main info I got to answer my original questions.

    1. From the date of your debt discharge letter, the TPD Servicing Unit then sends discharge letters to all loan holder(s), and they have 150 days to comply before another letter can be sent out. So, it can take up to that time for your account(s) to show a zero balance.

    2. Supposedly, the credit bureaus will be notified upon final debt discharge by the loan holders. However, upon further digging into this same topic on the subreddit, I found a couple of instances where other vets said it is wise to contact the credit bureaus separately and ASAP, to report these debts as being discharged. Otherwise it can take months or more than a year for things to be ironed out. Essentially, be proactive in this regard.

    3. Your debt discharge letter is sufficient evidence for any financial actions/investments you wish to take. You do not need to wait for all of the balances to fall off your credit report, nor your loan servicer account(s).

  • OkTea6969

Why only $88k? Are sure you done with school? Are you sure you won’t be needing Parent Plus for your child’s undergrad expenses?

  • therandinator2

Congrats! Now let it sink in. It may take time. If they ever tried to collect call the credit card companies and see if they can try and remove the history.
Fyi for everyone else you just need 100% either with TDIU or other wise, not just P&T as far as i understand, to have your student loans forgiven.

  • Inbeforetheclose1234

Does this include plus loans also?

  • Plastic-Expression14

I am currently at 90% with a claim pending that should (hopefully) bump me up to 100%. IÔÇÖm currently going to a private school for my masters that will allow you to take out 85k a year. Thankfully they participate in the yellow ribbon program so I only pay 2k a year out of pocket. If IÔÇÖm following correctly, if I get my 100% rating now and then take out the full amount the next two years. TheyÔÇÖll still forgive the full amount even though I was in school after I received my rating?

  • Miserable_Point_5437

HOW ABOUT YOU QUIT WORRYING AND LET THE PROCESS PROCESS?

  • FNGMOTO

Get drunk af. ThatÔÇÖs what I did to celebrate.

  • ChemicallyAlteredVet

Mine took 6 weeks and I didnÔÇÖt even know it was happening. I was very, very sick. In and out of the hospital multiple surgeries. Went from 40% to 100% P&T in 3 months and then I got a letter stating my loans were discharged. It literally was the fastest thing the VA has ever done.

  • TX-Wingman

Applied middle august and discharged in 30 days.
Loans zeroÔÇÖd out and marked paid on 2 of my credit reports as of middle October. Still waiting on 3rd report to reflect. Each report only dropped a couple points nothing major.

  • Global_Astronaut9040

Can you get loans discharged if they havenÔÇÖt been fully disbursed yet ? Or would you only get the amount they disbursed forgiven?

  • popento18

SAVE, start a retirement fund, do boring adult stuff to secure your future

  • Orin02

One thing to remember, itÔÇÖs likely your credit rating will go down after discharging your loans.

  • BookmarkThat

I had my loans discharged too. They said I was supposed to get a refund for the payments I made during COVID. I still haven’t gotten that. How long did it take to get yours? Did you have to call me them and hassle them?

  • dethnode

Does this apply to student loans for my spouse?

  • _capri_moon_

If you want to go back to school and take out loans the VA will allow a one time discharge if youre 100%?

  • No-Mix-6710

Can you still go back to school, using the GI Bill/Post 9/11 if youÔÇÖve discharged in the past? It doesnÔÇÖt prevent school enrollment entirely after the single discharge?

  • BperrHawaii

Got my 100 last week and have been wondering how this part works been waiting for someone to say something but like I said, just happened last week, so I know it will happenjust dont know when or how

  • Just_Koolin

    Congrats. Another satisfied veteran.

  • thelidpatrick

What if IÔÇÖm 100% but not P&T

  • Glittering_Chip8250

Quick question: can a student loan be spent on anything, like a car to get me to and from school or is it strictly for books and tuition ?

It took mine about 2 months because they all update at different time.

  • Alvarez_Fx

If you have no student loans but just acquired 100 p and t. Could I hypothetically take out a student loan to have it immediately forgiven?

  • Old_Measurement_6575

I don’t remember how long it actually took, but it did take about 6 months or so. It was quite long. And the only way I found out was by receiving 30-40 government checks for each month I paid into my student loan debt. You would think that they send you one check for the entire amount instead of sending you 2 to 3 dozen individuals check.

  • 6ixthLordJamal

If there a way you can defer having your student loans paid off?
