# Seeking Financial Advice as a Young University Student

Hello, I am new to reddit looking for some advice so I hope this post is okay.

I am a 19 yr old university student living in Australia with my parents. I have always been taught by my Dad the importance of understanding the basics of personal finance/debt as well as his general view that it is vital to avoid debt wherever possible. Since graduating high school a little over a year ago, I have budgeted with an excel doc I made and have saved approx. 60-70% of my part time income whilst studying. I am very lucky to have little expenses. As a result of this I have about 20,000 aud to my name saved in a managed index fund which has performed pretty well for me so far. Also, in Australia it is mandatory for an employer to contribute an additional 10% of my income into a superannuation (retirement) account – so I have that too.

I am no expert thatÔÇÖs for sure, however my query stems from the way in which I see my peers of my age using their money – spending it on extravagance in the form of holidays and luxury items etc. I personally feel as though I am in two minds, whilst I feel I am able to spend a decent amount on treating myself currently – I am a car guy at heart and would love to buy a car which I could work on, because I am able to drive my parentÔÇÖs cars currently.

However this would realistically wipe out all of the money I have to my name and I feel as though the smart option would be to continue as I am, to be able to set myself up financially for my future by starting now.

I often think too practically for my own good and would like to know other peopleÔÇÖs opinions – will the payoff be worth it if I continue as I am for the next three years of my degree and into full time work or am I wasting my younger years by not spending more of my money on the things I love?
I would really appreciate some perspective from others and what they did at my age and how it affected them
