Hi everyone, I’m facing significant issues with Barclays that have left me confused and frustrated.
I made the switch to Barclays last year to take advantage of their £175 switch incentive, which initially went smoothly. I have been diligent in depositing £800 and maintaining two direct debits with Plum & Moneybox every month to qualify for the £5 blue reward and offset the £5 fee. Additionally, I opened a Barclaycard credit card as a backup to my Amex and for international use. While I use the credit card monthly for small expenses of £100-200, I do not use the debit card for purchases. I was also considering opening the rainy day Saver account for its attractive interest rate on easy access savings.
However, about two weeks ago, I was unexpectedly locked out of my Barclays app. After contacting customer service, I was informed that my accounts had been closed without any explanation. While I was told I could continue using the credit card, subsequent letters informed me that both my current account and credit card account had been closed, leaving me perplexed. Despite being reassured by the Barclaycard app indicating continued access to my credit card account, I remain unable to access my current account and retrieve my funds. Despite multiple attempts to gain clarification, I have been unable to ascertain the reasons behind the sudden closures.

Just move on. You made a mistake. You took a bribe from a bank with rotten customer service ( and, FUN FACT – supported apartheid in South Africa in the 1980’s). Their share dealing service will go down as the worst customer service I have ever experienced – and that was their bereavement service. Try First Directs bribe. They have good customer service (and FUN FACT – they used to offer a £100 joining bonus and £100 LEAVING bonus after 12 months, knowing that people would rather stay with them, rather that take the money)
Yeah so that’s the problem with all these attractive switching deals that come with incentives and bonuses. The bank actually wants you to bank with them, full time and permanently, not cheat code your way to free money – that’s their wheelhouse!
As they’ve found out you’re not a “serious” customer, and they can’t make money out of you, they’re just dropping you. It sucks but ultimately you weren’t the mark they were looking for.

They did you a favour – Barclays are in the Stone Age of banking, their customer service is shocking and their app UX falls short of other banks. I left them a while ago to go to nationwide and Monzo – the customer service experience of these vs Barclays is night and day.
I’m in exactly the same position today: I have Barclays Premier and Barclaycard. I have Avios Rewards and Rainy Day Saver account. I only used the current account to pay off the credit card, top up and withdraw from the Saver, and to transfer in and out £3330 each month to fulfil the income requirements for the accounts.
I had a “regular review” a month ago where they asked a out one of these transfers in and out, the representative said this was fine. They froze the account two weeks account for KFC/AML checks and unfroze it on Friday, and I was able to transfer money in and out and top up the Saver. Today, the Barclays and Barclaycard apps are not working. They told me they are closing the current account for “commercial reasons” with immediate effect, and told me to go to the branch to get the £5000 I had in my saver. They told me the Barclaycard is still open.
I have raised a complaint, submitted a Subject Access Request, and submitted a check with CIFAS to make sure Barclays hasn’t put a marker on me (I assume not since they said it was for commercial reasons, gave me access to the funds on Friday, and said I could collect the funds in branch). Nevertheless, it’s a stressful experience and for no fault an my part as far as I can determine.
