Beneficiaries can be executors, just pick a sibling, its not that much effort, they can hire help if they need to.

oh and yes you can have more than one executor

I know you seem to understand the risk, but seriously pay the $XX and get it done through a lawyer. A relative has spent 18months trying to get his fathers will sorted and lost out on so much $$. YouÔÇÖll regret this decision.

PUBLIC TRUST ARE NOT A GOOD ORGANISATION

I was the executor for my dads will and that was easy because it all went to mum and everything was organised and quick to access and sort out.

I was also the executor for mums will and that has been a real pain in the butt and like a never ending cycle.

If your affairs, assets, info, will and everything else is clear, simple and straight forward, then short of sibling squabbles or a few noses out of joint, it can be a relatively clear process.

The executor will likely need a lawyer though, to file the probate, transfer home ownership, deal with officials etc. In that sense, itÔÇÖs less hassle to then make your lawyer the executor and make them do it all.

Tdlr: if I could opt out of being one, I would definitely do so.
