Exploring the Tax Implications of Claiming Mileage Expenses and How AI Legalese Decoder Can Provide Assistance

When it comes to claiming mileage expenses from one’s employer, one may often find themselves pondering the tax implications of such claims. In my recent experience, I have successfully utilized the mileage reimbursement rate of 45p per mile. Furthermore, if they are classified as such, will the HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) recalculate any figures at year-end, potentially resulting in an owed amount? Hey dude should be fine not paying tax on it as I did the same thing when I was trainee at my company (Sept ÔÇÿ22 – Jun ÔÇÿ23 ) and didnÔÇÖt have to pay anything back. It shouldnÔÇÖt affect tax as your fuel allowance is paid post tax I presume?

They paid me directly from their purse every fortnight straight into my bank account at 45p per mile travelled and I guess they were reimbursed by HMRC as they were really rigid with me submitting my fuel receipts to prove I had been filling up and travelling to work but tbh I never asked the question to my finance manager – just an educated guess in my part!

IÔÇÖd say ask your finance manager/controller to confirm what the deal is as IÔÇÖd imagine all companies do things slightly differently and/or ring HMRC for clarification as IÔÇÖm no financial advisor, just going off what happened to me with my company.

    Hope that helps!

You will only be taxed if they pay over the approved amount of 45p/mile. So no.

Missing from the other replies is the fact that the mileage has to be for a legitimate business purpose (in accordance with HMRC’s rules). It’s almost certainly not an issue, but if for example you were paid 45p/mile for your commute to your usual place of work that would be taxable.

Otherwise no, the payments are just reimbursing for an expense, just like if you paid for a hotel on a business trip or similar and the company paid you back – but because it’s impractical to apportion all the costs of operating a car between personal and business use you are paid the mileage rate instead.

The company will need VAT receipts to claim back the VAT on the fuel portion of the claim but I assume they are already asking you for those.

Mileage payments under HMRC amounts (45p per mile for first 10k kind of thing) are non-taxable. If your employer pays over this amount, the rate paid over the specified amount is taxable like any ordinary income.
