# Post-Marine Transition and Tax Questions

After leaving the Marines in September of last year, I successfully completed my Personally Procured Move (PPM) and received my payment for it. However, when I received my W2, I realized that there was no separate travel W2 provided, as my reimbursement was included in my regular W2. This can be seen through the discrepancy between the amounts listed in box 1 compared to boxes 2 and 3, with the difference representing my reimbursement amount.

## Opinions on Moving Expense Reimbursement and Tax Filing

As I navigate through TurboTax to input my moving expenses, I encountered a section that specifically addresses reimbursed moving expenses. It includes a note stating, “If you are in the military, don’t include any payment you received from the government for settlement of your travel claim.”

## Delving into the DMO Reimbursement Process

Considering that the Defense Military Office (DMO) does not directly reimburse moving expenses but rather compensates based on weight and distance, I am faced with a dilemma. Should I enter the PPM reimbursement in TurboTax, knowing that it’s already reflected in my W2, or should I enter a reimbursement amount of 0 to avoid double-counting and potentially impacting my tax return?

So your gross incentive is based on distance and weight. When you went to close out your PPM, did you claim any expenses? The taxable portion is Gross – Expenses, but this is already stated on your travel W-2.

    For example:

    Gross incentive: $5,000

    Expenses: $4,000

    Travel W-2 Box 1: $5,000

    Travel W-2 Box 12: P $4,000.00

Unless there are expenses which you did not claim with DMO already, you should not even file a Form 3903.

    >My question is, when inputting my moving expenses on TurboTax, it asks to enter reimbursed moving expenses and it further explains in one part “If you are in the military, don’t include any payment you received from the government for settlement of your travel claim.”

So you should have $4000 in moving expenses, but they all were reimbursed and nontaxable.
