    Are they your parents?

Just talk to your employer saying hey I’m going to sydney, can I work remotely or do you prefer I take annual leave?

  • Wendals87

Can’t answer this for you because we have no idea what you do for work

I would say it should be fine for most employers, but this is not legal advice

It varies from company to company. You just need to ask. Best case they say yes. Worst case they say no.

I’ve gone for a midweek holiday and worked sitting on the beach. I also generally make my hours up at night, but depends if your flexibility is there.

You don’t need to tell them, just be smart and have access to phone laptop and internet at all times. Backgrounds can be hidden on meetings, you can sit in your car to hide the environmental noise.

I know of some friends that have ducked off overseas to Bali and Thailand and still worked. You wouldn’t know any different.

Just take a sickie on one of those days

  • Knight_Day23

If its just one day, how will they find out unless you tell them? I’ve done this before for one day interstate. Didnt bother telling them. No one could tell I was logging in from interstate.

  • NinaEmbii

Could this be a liability issue? If you have an accident while interstate without informing your work, will you be eligible for workers comp?

    shameless plug for r/AusEmployment

This entirely depends on the company.

One of my good friends is WFH 2 days per week (thurs and fri) but would 100% need employer permission to go interstate on those days- reason is the company somewhat expects him to be able to be physically present if needed at times, its also just a professional courtesy in our organisation.

    if you are 100% WFH those 3 days, and there would be no foreseeable reason to need to be physically present anywhere, i’d say your employer would probably not say no. I would phrase it like this;

“Hi MANAGER, my partner/friend/whatever and are planning a trip to Sydney over X weekend and want to fly up thursday night, so we can attend X event on the friday night. I was hoping it would be okay for me to conduct my WFH day from our AirBnB on the friday rather than take leave to fly down and then have a day off i dont need. I dont see this impacting anything in terms of my work, the host has confirmed they have good wifi and i can tether off my phone if need be, i’ll be 100% contactable and available during my normal hours performing my normal WFH tasks, and my partner is intending to go out for the day and do some stuff im personally not interested in so i’ll probably get more done than if i was at home! I really hope this will be okay as it will allow us to attend X on friday night. Also if you have any reccomendations for things to do around the X area let me know!”

Read your contract and the company’s hybrid work policy.

it is best to check with your HR, so they can consider worker compensation implication.
