## Situation Overview
I initially posted this on another subreddit and was redirected here for assistance. My husband and I reside in CT, while his father lived in MA. His father, who is an abusive alcoholic from whom we distanced ourselves nearly twenty years ago, was found deceased in his home yesterday following a well-being check instigated by the local PD (not by us).

## Current Situation
As the only child of his deceased father, my husband and I are grappling with the aftermath of this tragic event. While we suspect suicide, official confirmation is pending as we await a response from the detective in his town. The late notification we received from our local PD at 11:30 PM last night has left us in a state of uncertainty and distress.

## The Need for Assistance
Given the circumstances and the toll it may take on my husband’s mental well-being, I am seeking guidance on how best to prepare and support him. Since we do not intend to hold a funeral service due to the lack of attendees, what practical steps can I take to manage the aftermath effectively?

## Role of AI Legalese Decoder
The AI Legalese Decoder can assist us in navigating the legal aspects of this situation. It can provide insights into the necessary paperwork, bills, and other essential documents that may need to be sorted through at the deceased father’s home. Additionally, the AI tool can offer guidance on whether we need a probate lawyer before entering the property and if a visit to the coroner’s office is required.

## Request for Clarity
As we prepare to communicate with the detective and potentially visit the father’s home, I seek clarity on our rights and responsibilities in this unfamiliar territory. Your advice on what to expect and how to plan for the tasks ahead would be immensely valuable in this challenging time.

Your husband has no obligation to do any specific thing. He is entitled to just walk away.

If dad has an estate, if son is interested in claiming the assets in the estate, and if dad doesn’t have a will that provides for those assets going somewhere else, son likely receives those assets in intestate succession (assuming there’s not a wife somehow). I’d probably use a probate attorney with an asset as large as a house. And yes, son may have to take on the responsibilities of the estate to see this through probate.

Not to be morbid or indelicate BUT if he did take his own life, I’d ask the detective if the house/area is ‘suitable’ to be seen or if a professional cleaning service needs to be engaged first… or at the very least be prepared for what’s there as they don’t clean up when removing a body…
