Fun fact, you’re going to have to have auto insurance in the state that you physically live in, regardless of where your residency for tax purposes is. Example: I’m a legal FL resident, but physically live in VA. My cars are registered and titled in FL, but my insurance policy is in VA since this is where the cars physically are and where they get primarily driven.

You’d have to pay the higher insurance premiums regardless of if you changed your legal residency. Some states are prone to hail storms (higher premiums), hurricanes (higher premiums), or require additional minimum coverage (higher premiums). Nothing to do with your legal residency for tax purposes though. Enjoy the tax break and don’t forget to shop around for different insurance quotes.

Why would you willing pay state taxes if you don’t have to, *especially* when you aren’t living there?

  • unknowntraveler94

I’m considering doing this myself and don’t really see the reason not to. Currently, I have Massachusetts which sucks for taxes and becoming less and less somewhere Id live. I’m stationed in Washinton state which does have its issues but I much prefer it + no income tax

  • happy_snowy_owl

    You’re conflating two different concepts.

    1) Where you pay income tax is based on your state of residency. For purposes of military personnel, this is simply where you intend to live after you separate.

    2) Your auto insurance is based on where the autombile is garaged, and must be changed when you PCS.

  • Ebon13

You don’t have to fully change your residency. Go to finance and ask for the form to change the state in the dfas system. It will show you in the new state, and state tax will no longer be pulled. The only catch is that if you show your home state for more than half the year, you’ll still have to pay state taxes when you do your return next year.

  • Jackthepilgrim

Yes, it’s worth it. Sometimes there are also other fringe benefits depending on the state.

  • Mysterious-Panic-809

I’m shooting a guess you’re in JBLM. I do what I can to spread the word to my Joes to make this change, do it!

  • NateLundquist

    Without a doubt.

  • Ryan-42

Do it! When I went from NC to Alaska, I changed everything to Alaska. My insurance changed regardless because the driving of the vehicle is in Alaska. Regardless, I changed my residency because when you eventually PCS somewhere else, your insurance will change again, but not your state taxes.

  • UselessInfomant

You get what you pay for. States with no income tax have terrible schools. Will you save money? For sure. Should you work in a high tax state and retire in a no tax state? Perhaps.
