**Converting USD to AUD: Evaluating HSBC and Wise Accounts**

**Introduction**

In my financial endeavors, I encounter the need to convert my hard-earned USD into AUD. Currently, I am utilizing HSBC for this purpose due to their attractive exchange rates and absence of additional fees. However, I must admit that I haven’t extensively researched alternative options or undertaken a thorough examination of exchange rates.

**The Suggestion of Opening a Wise Account**

Recently, I received advice from someone to consider opening a Wise account, claiming it to be a significantly superior choice for currency conversions. However, upon initial observation, I fail to identify any major discrepancies between the offerings of HSBC and Wise.

**Seeking Insights from Experienced Individuals**

Thus, I am reaching out to individuals who possess firsthand experience with both HSBC and Wise to shed some light on this matter. By gathering insights from those who have engaged with both banking options, I hope to make an informed decision regarding my currency conversion needs.

In addition to avoiding any additional charges, HSBC’s rates have been perceived as relatively favorable. However, my own admission of not conducting extensive homework on the matter necessitates a more comprehensive examination.

On the other hand, Wise has emerged as a promising alternative. The individual who recommended Wise emphasized its superiority but failed to offer concrete evidence supporting this claim. While I acknowledge the potential benefits of a Wise account, such as increased transparency or even lower transaction fees, I yearn for a more detailed comparison between the two platforms.

If you have IBKR US account, you can transfer USD in, convert to AUD and then withdraw. That should get you institutional exchange rates

Wise is the move. Any bank will rinse you either in fees or the exchange rate spread

I use OFX and receive USD directly into a foreign currency account with commonwealth. I then confirm a rate with OFX and directly wire that USD to their account and they conduct the exchange, then send back AUD to my nominated account.

It requires a bit of set up, but is good. Never exchange directly with your bank.

The Wise rate will almost definitely be better rate-wise. You can see Wise’ rates before opening an account by going to https://wise.com/au/send-money/

Compare the amount you receive with what HSBC quotes. Ignore fees and only compare the final amount you receive.

At the time I’m writing this, for $10,000 USD, HSBC Aus quotes $15,470.98 AUD and Wise $15,804.57. So you’d get $333.59 more AUD using Wise.

    Checkout Wise and Revolut premium

I used HSBC to transfer 150k AUD to USD. Ended up losing out about 500 bucks instead of going via wise but it was much easier and super fast. No fees either. I am a HSBC Premier member though so not sure if that changes anything. Have a look at the Wise rates and compare and do what you think is best!

Wise. Best exchange ratesi have seen for that conversion.

I get paid in USD to Wise, then move it to my bank account in AUD. The transfer fees are way less than sending it directly to my local bank account, and the exchange rate is much better too.

I’m using wise from almost 4 years now! It’s the best thing ever! Local accounts in US, CA, UK and NZ. Multi currency card with best forex rates and no hidden charges! Even currency conversion have the best rates.

I use Commbiz. Find the rates to be decent.
All my accounts are with Commbank, so it’s convenient
I looked into Wise. Their rates were either on par or merely better than Commbiz, and it was more cumbersome , so stuck with Commbiz
