Microsoft Introduces Layer and Transparency Support in Paint

In a recent update, Microsoft has added layer and transparency support in its default Windows image editor, Paint. This enhancement comes after the company’s announcement last month to incorporate AI enhancements into Paint and Photos app of Windows 11. The feature is now available for testing by Windows Insiders in the Canary or Dev channels.

The introduction of the layer and transparency support was confirmed by Dave Grochocki, Principal Program Manager Lead Windows Inbox Apps, in a blog post. The latest version of Paint, 11.2308.18.0, includes this new functionality.

While initially available for Windows Insiders, users running the latest stable version of Windows 11 can also download and install the new Paint app. Here are the steps to follow:

  1. Go to the Adguard website.
  2. Switch the first field (reading URL (link)) to ProductId.
  3. Paste 9PCFS5B6T72H into the second field.
  4. Switch the third field from RP to Fast.
  5. Activate the checkmark button to retrieve all matching files.
  6. Download the file Microsoft.Paint_11.2308.18.0_neutral_~_8wekyb3d8bbwe.msixbundle to the local system. (Microsoft may release an update eventually, so that the version 11.2308.18.0 may be higher. If that is the case, pick the newer file).
  7. Double-click on the downloaded msixbundle file and follow the installation instructions to update Paint on the system.

It is important to note that the new Paint app is not compatible with Windows 10 operating system. Attempting to install it on Windows 10 devices will result in an installation error.

Once the update is installed, users will notice the new Layers icon in Paint’s main toolbar. This icon enables users to add, remove, and manage layers in their images. The layers sidebar, accessible by clicking on the Layers icon, displays existing layers and provides options to add new layers, change their order, and perform actions like duplicating, hiding, and merging layers with a right-click.

Transparency support is another addition to the new Paint app. In single-layer images, transparency is indicated by checkerboard patterns. Erasing content from images now results in transparency instead of white areas. In images with multiple layers, erasing content reveals the layers beneath it.

Despite its improvements, Paint is still not a substitute for more advanced image editors like Paint.Net, GIMP, or Adobe Photoshop. Nevertheless, Microsoft’s commitment to enhancing the default image editor in the Windows operating system is evident.
