In a letter, Reset.Tech Australia called the move “extremely concerning” as Australia is set to hold a referendum next month. The group expressed worries about the lack of a reporting channel on X’s platform for electoral misinformation.
Fortunately, users can still report posts that they consider to be hateful, abusive, or spam. However, the removal of the dedicated feature for electoral misinformation may hinder voters’ ability to report such content ahead of important events like the upcoming Australia referendum and the 2024 US presidential elections.
According to Reset.Tech Australia, the feature remains available in the European Union, where a recent study suggests that X has the highest proportion of disinformation among the six major social networks. This study also highlighted that X had the largest “ratio of discoverability” of disinformation, indicating a higher likelihood of users encountering false information on the platform. In contrast, YouTube had the lowest discoverability ratio, according to the study.
The EU’s Values and Transparency Commissioner, Vera Jourova, warned X to comply with the law, emphasizing close monitoring of the platform’s actions in relation to disinformation.
Since Elon Musk took over X (formerly known as Twitter) in late 2022, the company has faced accusations of allowing a rise in hate speech and misinformation. However, Mr. Musk denies these allegations, stating that the platform’s “Community Notes” feature is a better way to fact-check by allowing users to comment on posts and flag false or misleading content.
