I’m in the IT field and have been for 32 years. I miraculously never was required to leave. I know several guys from my program who have done well for themselves in the IT field.
Here’s the thing about the future. You never know until you try. Don’t let the worries of “what if I fail” be the deciding factor holding you back. Go forward with the best food and positive energy. Make your future employer prospects say no to you. Do this by building your skills to the best you can for the job you want. And don’t not apply for something because you’re afraid they’ll reject you.
Your job application path will be harder than others but stick with it and you’ll get there.
Being on the registry is the main problem in my opinion. When I have a background check done it’s been so long it comes up clean. However, a lot of companies check the registries. I’ve been shot down so many times over that. I am also in the process of learning coding. I’m hoping to find independent work with that. I’m getting to old for labor work.
Awesome! First of all you don’t need a degree in psychology to sponsor anyone in any twelve step program. I have been in them for nearly 18 years…it’s the experience strength and hope that we share as well as growing in our spiritual relationship with our higher power (mines is God btw) …
Honestly …good luck finding a job in computer…most of the big companies won’t take the chance on them losing contracts or clients if the word gets out that they are employing an RSO..not trying to be a downer just realistic and from my experience… I hold two BS degrees..after my arrest I worked different jobs, telemarketer, factory, and food service..food service won the day for me…I just retired as the food and beverage manager for a franchisee of the Hilton garden inn…
Consider getting into peer support training and looking for a job in that career where you are part of the mental health team providing help to suffering addicts… that could be a potential career path.. where you could use your psych degree…

While I applaud you for wanting to be an SAA sponsor and things like that, you really do need to find something that’s going to bring in the money. I don’t want to sound like I’m negative Nelly or anything like that, but a college degree probably isn’t going to make too much of a difference in your profession at this point unless you choose to go into manufacturing or a field a lot of people don’t like or enjoy doing.
This isn’t to say that you can’t have a good job. I do think that you need to tailor your job to specific areas though. Personally, I did almost 11 years federal for a possession and/or distribution charge. Within a month of getting out, I got a job in manufacturing which I have been doing the entire time I’ve been out, and I am making over $29 an hour. I do work night shift 6:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. as well. There are places where you can go and work, but I suspect that these are probably the types of jobs you haven’t done a lot of considering your college education.
As for me, I have a bachelor’s, nearly a master’s, and I was accepted the pharmacy school before I was officially charged and did time for my crime. So, I have an educational background as well. I had some hopes that I could go into some of my previous fields again, but those hopes are quickly dashed by state licensing requirements and things like that. So, why anything may be possible, we also have to face the fact that we have closed doors because of the things that we have done in our past.
