Investments in downtown areas play a crucial role in enhancing the overall vitality of a community like Bedford, according to Rick Siger, Secretary of the state Department of Community and Economic Development. Siger emphasized this point during a recent stop with Governor Josh Shapiro, where they toured small businesses and underscored the significance of the Keystone Communities Program.

With their visit to Bedford’s downtown, Siger and Shapiro explored various local establishments such as Juli’s Wearable Arts and the Espy House. They concluded their tour with a brief news conference near the town center, adjacent to the weekly farmer’s market.

Their efforts aim to channel funding into projects that will benefit communities like Bedford, supporting initiatives such as sidewalk enhancements, improved street lighting, facade renovations for small businesses, and the development of affordable housing across Pennsylvania.

Bedford was a selected destination for the tour, reflecting Shapiro’s belief in the town’s appeal and potential to attract visitors from neighboring regions. The tour aligns with Pennsylvania’s new tourism brand, which highlights local attractions and encourages tourism within the state.

Overall, the Keystone Communities Program has allocated nearly $7 million to support 49 projects across 25 counties, underscoring the program’s broad impact on community development initiatives.

Reflecting on the program’s impact, State Rep. Frank Burns expressed strong support for the grants allocated to support neighborhood growth and stability in Cambria County and beyond.
