SouthState Bank Launches Comprehensive Small Business Banking Team

Winter Haven, Fla., July 25, 2023 /PRNewswire/ — SouthState Bank recently announced the launch of a new small business banking team to cater to the increasing demand in its Southeastern footprint. The bank recognizes the importance of providing tailored products and services to meet the specific needs of small business owners in the region. With a team of knowledgeable bankers and a library of resources, SouthState aims to provide enhanced support to small business owners and contribute to the growth of local economies.

Richard Murray, the President of SouthState Bank, expressed his confidence in the new initiative, stating, “Offering our small business customers a line of products that fits their needs, accompanied by well-rounded, knowledgeable bankers and a library of small business resources, are enhancements we know business owners across the Southeast will benefit from. Small business owners make local economies thrive, and SouthState is committed to supporting both.”

Leading the newly formed small business banking team is Matt Vegter, who has been promoted to the position of Director of Small Business Banking at SouthState. With 15 years of experience in the banking industry, Vegter has played a significant role in the development of the Business Lending Express program. This program has streamlined the underwriting process for small business loans, reducing costs and decision-making time for both the bank and its small business clients. Vegter holds a bachelor’s degree in finance from Southeastern University and a master’s degree in business administration from Stetson University. He has also completed programs at the Florida School of Banking and the Stonier Graduate School of Banking.

To assemble a highly capable team, Vegter has handpicked experienced small business bankers from within SouthState Bank as well as other financial institutions. The team includes:

– Holton Bell, who joins SouthState from Addicus LLC in Alabama, where he worked in client relations. Prior to that, he served as a private banker at BBVA Compass Bank and a financial advisor at Raymond James.
– Krystle Mall, with 10 years of experience as a SouthState branch manager. She began her banking career with SouthState in 2004 and has recently relocated from the Myrtle Beach/Conway area of South Carolina to assume her role in small business banking.

– Mike Marshall, joining SouthState from Intercoastal Financial Group in Fort Pierce, Florida, where he served as a finance broker. His past career roles include director of retail sales, market sales manager, and general manager at Drivetime LLC.
– Ray Merritt, who has been with SouthState since 2011, working his way up from a financial services representative to a branch manager in Conway. Merritt’s branch led the Grand Strand market in goals for two consecutive years.
– Brian Moon, who brings almost 20 years of banking experience from Bank of America, Wells Fargo, SunTrust, and SouthState. He moves from the role of branch manager in Tucker, Georgia, to join the small business banking team.
– Adam Odom, who served as a branch manager for SouthState in Columbia, South Carolina, for seven years. Prior to that, he worked at Wells Fargo, SunTrust, and BB&T.
– Lauren Thompson, who has spent the last eight years as a branch manager in SouthState’s Richmond market before transitioning to small business banking. She has also gained experience as a personal banker for First Enterprise Bank and retail banker with Woodforest National Bank.

SouthState Bank has also expanded its private wealth and middle market banking teams with the addition of several key hires. These include Phillip R. Garrison as a private wealth advisor in Charlotte, North Carolina, Mike Maguire as a private wealth relationship manager in Jacksonville, Florida, Mia Mendez as a private wealth associate in Jacksonville, Florida, and Brian Combs as a middle market business development executive in Richmond, Virginia.
