The Minnesota Department of Natural Resources closed the park on Feb. 16 and announced intentions to transfer the land in mid-March, in accordance with legislation passed in 2023.

The land for the Upper Sioux Agency Park was purchased with federal funds when the park was created in 1963. The federal funding requires the state to replace the recreational value they represent if the land is transferred.

Board Chair Randy Kramer said he did not believe the letter would adversely affect current work with the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources to identify possible improvements to Renville County Parks as possible replacement opportunities.

The letterÔÇÖs focus is not aimed at the DNR but rather objects to the missteps that have occurred.

ÔÇ£By not saying anything, I think weÔÇÖre doing a disservice to all the people in Yellow Medicine and Renville counties and all the people using the park,ÔÇØ said the chair.

The Yellow Medicine County Board approved the letter earlier this month and has sent it to the U.S. Department of the Interior, and state and federal elected officials for the area. It asks the National Park Service to ÔÇ£hold the Minnesota Legislature and the Department of Natural Resources accountable to the law or deny the transfer.ÔÇØ

The letter states that the $5 million allocated for replacement opportunities is ÔÇ£completely arbitraryÔÇØ and does not meet the requirements of federal law.

The Chippewa County Board of Commissioners has discussed the letter and instructed County Auditor/Treasurer/Coordinator Michelle May to draft a version of it for consideration at the next board meeting.
