## New Information about Child’s Benefits

Receiving Unexpected Financial Aid

Without sparing too many details, I recently received a surprising letter informing me of “new information about child’s benefits” along with a substantial financial windfall. The check was quite substantial, to say the least.

I hesitate to delve into the intricate details of my past, but here is a brief summary: my parents went through a divorce, my military father suffered injuries and disappeared, I was placed in foster care, then went on to college after my biological mother passed away. I eventually landed a job and now find myself in a stable, “normal” family situation where I earn an average income. Despite these ups and downs in my life, I consider myself to be a typical, average individual.

I am puzzled as to what could have triggered this unexpected turn of events. Could it be related to child support that I may have never received? While I am incredibly grateful for this financial boost, especially since my car needs new tires, I can’t help but wonder why it took years for this to come to light.

Yeah, don’t spend a possible overpayment until you confirm it’s legit.

Child’s benefits for Social Security could have been due to you as a minor child. If you were in foster care it’s possible these went to an agency and retained funds were returned when you were in their care. These would then be released to you as an adult when they were able to locate you to pay. Of course calling and talking to the agency will be the only way to verify for sure.

It would be odd that you had no contact with anyone related to this prior.

Is the check from the Social Security Administration? If so, you should call them.

Create a myssa account and see what information you can find in there. I bet you were on a parent’s record as a child and we’re not aware, and now funds were saved by the state or someone else while you were in their care. SSA should also be able to fill you in on the details but it’s tough to get in touch with them. Be persistent!

I grew up in foster care myself, from 3-17 graduation. My dad never paid support and my mom was incapable of it. When I went to graduate I was called in by the judge who told me the state was paying my college for a year. That’s something I’d never expected but it was helpful! Not to incur that debt was a blessing. Congrats op! As long as it’s confirmed you’re good to go! Spend wisely tho because it’ll go fast.
