    Did you tell them you had an NDA? They probably just got bad vibes from your over-sharing… I’d be more concerned that you’d violate the NDA that you’re about to sign if hired. As far as policing other companies NDAs I don’t know why they’d care beyond passing on hiring unless it was so egregious that they thought they had legal exposure if they didn’t say something (like you went to Northrop Grumman and literally pulled out Boeing branded slide decks in your interview).

    They almost certainly did not contact your company.

    They just assumed that if you shared your current company’s “confidential and sensitive” information with them that you would be willing to share their confidential and sensitive information with other people, and that means they do not want to hire you.

    Take this as a lesson. Treat confidential information seriously.

    I am always very careful with interviews to say this is publicly available knowledge, versus if something is behind an NDA I will allude to what I did but keep it vague

    It’s a tricky line to navigate, but if you acknowledge the NDA, it usually is respected by the interviewer

    Are you currently working at the company you shared secrets of? And to clarify in you first paragraph are you saying that you had a bullet point stating that it was confidential then shared it any way?

    IANAL but I have worked hiring for almost 9 years and two tech companies in different industries. We never even thought to waste time looking into if you were following your nda from someone else’s company. Only knew about applicants NDA’s if they told us or if it came up in a reference check which was still super rare.

    Yes someone might not want to hire you based on you historically breaking a contract where the basis is to not share company secrets but again how and why do they have that info?

    You could ask for clarification into what nda from their perspective you broke.

    It would be highly unusual for a prospective future employer to contact your current one and ask questions about you. Nobody would ever interview at a company that routinely asked questions about people it was recruiting. Most job candidates want their interest in a new position to be a secret from their current employer.

    It would also be unusual for a company to contact your employer after rejecting you for a job. This company is not a party to your NDA. Unless your disclosure might harm somebody, they’d probably be more worried about out interfering with your current employment – for which you could sue – than about safeguarding the secrets of a company in another industry.

    TLDR: you’ve learned an important lesson, and you’re probably in the clear.

    Do you think it was a trick question, to see how much or what you would divulge? This is a good learning experience, albeit a disappointing one. I would be hard pressed to think they will be contacting your employers. Word would get out and their applicant pool would shrink IMO.

    Normally, your former employer is only contacted when you are being offered the job, if a background check is required. You struck out in your interview, that’s all. Be more careful in the future.

    If this is in an area / industry that is reasonably small, you might have someone reach out to the company as a heads up. This happened in a previous company I worked in, we all had new mandatory privacy and security training because someone did what you did in an interview and a friend of management was at the new company and so let them know of the breach.

    How would the interviewing company know you had an NDA and what that NDA would even cover?

    I used to always interview people for technical jobs, but the concept of an NDA and what they were allowed or not allowed to discuss never came up…

    Now, if you directly stated in the interview that something was secret and confidential but said you would talk about it anyway, that might just be a red flag for HR.
