## Situation Overview
My housemate unilaterally placed their Ring camera in our shared lounge room without obtaining consent, in order to monitor their dog. This has impinged on my privacy and created discomfort as it is a shared space that I frequently traverse in our co-rented accommodation. Despite attempts to address the issue through communication with my housemate, they maintain that they have the right to install the camera without my permission.

## Extension of Situation
The presence of the camera infringing on my privacy has limited my freedom in the shared living space. I am restricted in engaging in personal conversations and feeling at ease in my own home. Additionally, the constant surveillance could potentially have broader implications for my sense of security and comfort within the living environment.

## How AI Legalese Decoder Can Help
AI Legalese Decoder can assist in this situation by providing clarity on the legal rights and responsibilities of tenants in shared rental accommodations. By inputting specific details into the Decoder, it can generate legal explanations and potential courses of action that I can take to address the privacy breach caused by the unauthorized installation of the Ring camera. lol take the camera down, thats hella creepy

  • TheHammer1987

Log in to wifi router and block the cameras IP. If housemate is not tech savvy they will never figure it out

  • caibs

Unnecessarily elaborate plan: Take a photo of the living room from the angle of the camera. Print it out. Take the camera and hide it, looking at the printed photo.

Actual plan: hit it with a hammer

  • clockwerked1

Double down if they don’t listen.

Buy x4 cameras off fb/ebay, and put them in very obvious and weird locations. One on top of fridge looking directly at anyone who uses it. One directly looking at the room mate’s door, one on the dining table staring at you as you eat, and one opposite of the ring camera.

    Now you’re all uncomfortable.

But seriously, you can’t do anything. Best thing to do is block it when you have guests around.

  • Justan0therthrow4way

I’d block the MAC address on your router. Unless they are somewhat technical they won’t be able to fix this.

  • Double_Elderberry_92

Hit the lens with a Scotch Brite pad. Keep hitting it with one till they get the hint

  • Puzzleheaded-Pie-277

I’d just cover it when home or turn it off/take batteries out or throw it in their bedroom.

  • Feeling_Act_3682

    Laser pointer.

  • Chuggachoochoo3

FFS just unplug it when you are home

  • Remarkable_Wolf_3722

Just put a pot over it. They can’t see or hear anything, eventually they’ll get sick of it.

  • Old-Artist567

Block the cameras IP on your modem, or double down and put in multiple cameras of your own.

But at this stage I feel like they are trying to get you out if there. If you can find somewhere else to live do that. Tell the landlord that the Tennant is setting up cameras in the internal common areas and your not comfortable living there anymore.

  • Raida7s

I’d allow it if I’m given the login details to turn it off when I’m home.

If I’m not given those rights, then no recording device mate.

  • Togakure_NZ

The following will be of use, particularly the references to the QLD Invasion of Privacy Act section about 2/3rds of the way down.

    [https://www.oic.qld.gov.au/guidelines/for-community-members/Information-sheets-privacy-principles/camera-surveillance,-video,-and-audio-recording-a-community-guide](https://www.oic.qld.gov.au/guidelines/for-community-members/Information-sheets-privacy-principles/camera-surveillance,-video,-and-audio-recording-a-community-guide)

Key point: “The *Invasion of Privacy Act 1971* (Qld) (**IoP Act**) makes it an offence to *audio record* a private conversation you are **not** involved in. A person is *involved in* a conversation if they are part of it, for example, having a face to face or phone conversation with someone or involved in a group discussion.”

    Plus other points.

  • Equivalent-Ad7207

Put it in the toilet, let the ring camera get a real shot of a ring.

  • Histeridae

In Qld it’s illegal to record audio of conversations you are not a part of – not sure about the other states. If it’s motion activated then it will be recording and storing possibly both video & audio.

  • evangelista_smile

You could literally just have a discussion with them

  • peytaytoe

That’s crazy – I have a very similar situation (but also very different apparently)

We have 2x eufy cameras set up inside our living spaces to watch our dogs and talk to them through the camera if they’re up to no good.

    HOWEVER
Upon setting the cameras up we gave our housemate access to the cameras through the app so that she can turn the cameras off whenever she wants. Especially if home alone and wanting some privacy. They’re also just plugged into the wall outlets so she can always just unplug them if needed.

Someone else commented this but until you find a better solution, you should definitely just unplug the camera whenever you’re home alone in the meantime.

  • Sufficient-Parking64

I would just say look man I’m not willing to end up homeless because you won’t give me the privacy of not being filmed in my own house. Move out or stop it, if that doesn’t work just become the most intolerable roomate ever lol. It’s not illegal cut your toenails on there bed, or shit in the shower lol

  • beccjk

What’s the bet ur a girl and the weirdo who wants to ‘watch their dog’ is a dude 🙄

  • PureMassacre99

Does the agent know they have a dog in the property? Are pets permitted under the lease?
I hope you know what I am getting at…

  • Mrsteere

Not a chance can they do that. In common areas. And theyd have to get permission from owners too. Thats qld law.

  • Weary_Patience_7778

    Walk around naked.

  • Lovesmespinach

Depending on your state you’ll probably find it is against a Surveillances Devices Act for someone to record sound/audio in a private area without the consent of those being recorded. Write them a letter / email explaining this and if that doesn’t work…. I dunno.

  • PureMassacre99

You can always put a statue 🗿 or ornament in front of it.

Play loud music when you want to have a private conversation 😜😜😜

  • Party_Thanks_9920

The smallest room in the house, place cling film over the bowl after a number 2, and lay the camera on the cling film.

  • dutchydownunder

Walk around butt naked, a lot!

  • takethepressuedown

Set up a camera in another common area to monitor your pet rock.

  • Able-Surprise9501

Put a cup of something over it. Blocks sound and vision. If they have a sad, say I’m not comfortable having my private moments recorded and will be doing this everytime I’m in the room

  • PureMassacre99

smear the camera with dog shit , blame his dog. He will remove it ASAP

  • PeakingBlinder

    Remove. Or. Block. The. Camera.

    C’mon, grow a set.
