An organization that represents more than 2,000 news publishers sent letters on Tuesday to federal agencies, urging them to launch an investigation into Google after the tech behemoth began removing links to California-based news outlets. This drastic action by Google has caused concern among publishers who rely on online visibility for their survival.

The move from Google, which drew swift backlash, came over a proposed law that would require tech companies to pay for news content. This has sparked a fierce debate between publishers and tech giants over fair compensation for news content.

“The fact that one company can shut down the means by which 90% of the public find online content in order to achieve their own political and business ends show just how much policymakers need to act, and act now,” he posted Friday on X. “Google is not above the law, and they should not be allowed to act as if they are.” This highlights the urgent need for regulatory intervention to ensure fair practices in the digital news landscape.
