STOCKTON ÔÇô Stockton business owners victimized by theft and vandalism may be getting a much-needed lifeline as the city launched a program to help with broken windows at small businesses. The program aims to alleviate the financial burden faced by small businesses, including Martinizing Cleaners, which has been targeted by burglars four times in the past year, according to owner Manish Jamnadas.

With the recent incident resulting in a meager few cents stolen but an $800 repair bill, the City of Stockton recognized the struggles faced by small business owners and initiated this assistance program. Carrie Wright, the city’s director of economic development, stated that “small businesses are faced with lots of challenges whether it’s vandalism, rising costs, finding employees. So this is one small way the city can assist them.”

Eligibility criteria for the program include businesses being within the city limits, having exterior window damage caused on or after May 2, 2023, providing proof of window damage and repair, and confirming the absence of insurance payout. The program offers a maximum grant of $800 per window, with a limit of $2,000 per business location.

To fund this initiative, the city approved a one-time allocation of $250,000 from the general fund. This program complements the similar one rolled out earlier this year by the Downtown Stockton Alliance, with the main distinction being that downtown businesses can repeatedly apply for funding for broken windows.

While business owners express gratitude for the assistance, some argue that more comprehensive measures are needed to address the crime issue. Jamnadas stated, “They need to do something more about the problem. This is just patchwork, like putting a band-aid on it. It’s not doing anything.”
