Should I Consider Removing My Wealth Management Company Due to Unsatisfactory Performance in My First Year of Investing?

In my first year of investing, I find myself essentially flat year-to-date. This lack of growth has left me feeling unsure of how to proceed, as I lack the experience to confidently manage my investments without assistance. I currently have $300k in a taxable account consisting of stocks and ETFs, with an additional $30k in an IRA that is managed by the wealth management company. Despite this substantial investment of $330k, I have only seen a minimal increase to $336k after factoring in the 1% fee charged by the company.

This stagnant growth raises concerns and begs the question of whether this performance is reflective of the current market conditions or if I should consider finding an alternative solution. As a first-time investor, I am unsure if this is a typical experience or if I should be expecting more significant returns.

The AI Legalese Decoder could provide valuable insight into the fees and performance of my wealth management company. By scrutinizing the legal jargon and complex language typically found in investment contracts, the AI Legalese Decoder can clarify the terms and conditions of my agreement with the wealth management company. This would help me understand if the 1% fee is justifiable based on the services provided and if there are any hidden clauses that may be impacting my investment growth.

Furthermore, the AI Legalese Decoder can analyze the historical performance of my investments and compare it to market trends, providing me with a clearer understanding of whether the lack of growth is attributed to the current market conditions or the management of my wealth. Armed with this information, I can make an informed decision on whether to retain the services of the wealth management company or seek alternative investment strategies.

How do you have $30k in an IRA if this is the first year you are investing?

  • bbrackett

How are you invested? When did you start? The market is down 11% from the high point of July. Bonds are negative on the year so if you’re invested there that can be part of it.

We do not know enough about your situation to say if they have done okay by you or not.

  • Hiplodudley

You absolutely don’t need a wealth management firm with that little invested, especially at that rate.

  • bkcarp00

Wealth Management won’t beat the market. The market is flat to down this year so you are average.

Good god, you’re paying 1%? I’m sure your wealth mgmt company is very happy.

You can buy 3-4 LOW COST mutual funds for literally 1/10th of that on your own. I’m up 11% this year, 9% last year, 34% year before that. The most expensive fund I own is a metals/commodities fund charging 0.13%.

The wealth mgt company took their 1% and left you with no profits. I sense you are younger, so I’d suggest buying a low-cost stock index fund from a brokerage and letting it accumulate. I learned this the hard way by giving financial advisors their cut first.

you might want to ask in r/bogleheads

also, everyone has been someone flat (that is to say, up and down and up and then sideways). ItÔÇÖs been a weird market.

What’s the management fee? I’d just bring it all to a robo advisor, betterment is .25% annual fee, which isn’t that bad. There are many ETFs with that as their expense ratios that you’re paying.

Well, considering VTSAX is up over 6.5% YTD and you donÔÇÖt have to do anything with that, you really have to begin questioning what youÔÇÖre paying these wealth managers for if theyÔÇÖre not beating a bog-standard SP500 ETF.

  • Cerebral_Savage

My local bank is paying 5.62% for a 5 month CD. If your guys canÔÇÖt beat that, you should look elsewhere.
