It took me 15 minutes to switch from Telus to Public using their app and an eSIM, in my pyjamas. Their site lets you change your plan to whatever is on their public site, without calling a call centre. To me, not talking to customer service is the best customer service. My plan is $50, CAN-US, 40GB 5G.

  • Anthropocenes

After the initial set up I haven’t needed any customer service. I set it and forget it.

Once a year I’ll login to check for a deal better than the one I’m getting and often I’ll find it. I’ve saved upwards of $3000 on phone bills in the 5 years that I’ve been with PM. For me it’s a no brainer.

Not to mention, any time I accessed “customer service” with my previous provider I was met with someone trying to sell me something.

  • alzhang8

Would you pay 20$/month more with a big company and get “better” customer service?

  • Acrobatic_Foot9374

I’ve been using them for 6 months now, they’re on the Telus network so in my area (BC) works really well. I couldn’t care less about it not having customer service as I’m not the type of person that would constantly call them to complain/ask for discounts so I’m very happy with picking up my services and handling everything myself through a web browser or their app.

I would say their phone app sucks, so I use the browser version.

One positive thing I found is that if they have a sale on plans you can go ahead and change to that plan without much fuzz. With other carriers I’ve seen promotions I can’t take advantage of because they tend to be catered to new activations only. With public I just took advantage of a black Friday deal and switched from a $39 4G plan to a $35 5G plan with the same amount of GBs and other perks I had before, it took me less than 5 min to do the change online.

Another thing I like about Public is that they have some sort of cash back program, like for every month I pay my bill I get like 1,25 of cash back on their app, if you let accumulate that long enough you can cash it out for a free month of service or use it to get other add ons.

  • GuzzlinGuinness

They are great. New better deal comes out ? You can switch to it in the app immediately . No need to call a retention department and beg.

  • JohnSamuelCrumb

I am very happy with them. Cheapest plan around, easy to use self serve website. My only issue is the lack of wi-fi calling.

  • chugganuggin

IÔÇÖve been with them since 2019, never had an issue. Never had to pay extra unknown fees, ever. Just switched from $36 20g 4g to $34 30g 5g for Black Friday and you can choose to apply the changes on the spot or your next billing cycle!

  • DegenerativePoop

I also swapped over last week. Currently have 40GB for $40 5G unlimited. Service has been normal so far. I did have to message their CS using their forums, which is inconvenient, BUT, they did reply fairly quickly and I was up and running 100% within the same day.

They are owned by Telus, so you get Telus/Bell coverage which is good.

  • jimmywisdom

Their site is easy to navigate and they have many helpful official forums to explain how things work with billing, data usage etc. When I was with PM, I never had a reason to speak to a CSR. I only switched because I hopped on a corporate Rogers plan.

  • kerbalgenius

I just switched to PM and itÔÇÖs been solid so far. I had to open a ticket to transfer my Koodo number to PM but it was handled pretty quickly so I have no complaints.

  • Concealus

Switch was easy; 10 minutes via eSIM with no worries. Thus far; itÔÇÖs been equivalent.

  • FolkSong

Very smooth for me, never needed any CSR. It was great being able to port a number just by entering your info on the website. Makes you wonder why other carriers make you call in for that!

Also they have a very active community forum where you can get help or discuss new plans etc.

  • Cariboodude

I’ve been using Public in BC since 2017 and have had 0 issues. The referrals and loyalty rewards have knocked the cost down from $25 + tax to less than $16 tax included. Plus other Christmas gifts leaving me with 400 non-expiring international minutes and 1 G of non-expiring access. I have nothing bad to say about PM

  • JT26_CLL

Talked to a buddy who works for Telus/Koodo. He said PM uses Telus’ pre-paid Towers and not the actual normal tower like Telus and Koodo use. Reception might be not as good as the other two.

Take that with a grain of salt but there is a reason its cheaper than Koodo.

  • w3rkit

They don’t seem to have roaming which makes them a no-go for me. Imagine trying to log into a vital account that requires SMS-based 2FA while abroad.

  • kyonkun_denwa

I switched from Koodo to Public Mobile a while back and I noticed that for some reason the network is a little more janky. Like I have more reception issues and less consistent speed. I suspect itÔÇÖs a 5G vs LTE thing.

IMO the 5G isnÔÇÖt worth it. For the same price I would personally go with Koodo, the only reason IÔÇÖve stayed with Public is because IÔÇÖve referred 7 people and I get a pretty decent monthly discount as a result.

  • mdmd89

If youÔÇÖre looking at a plan that doesnÔÇÖt have 5G coverage then look at Fizz also.

40$ for 40GB. Works great for me and they have coverage in the Ottawa region.

  • corysgraham

Been with public for well over a year now and it has been fantastic. Not a single issue, can change your plan whenever you want to get the better deals. Set up is dead easy. Any concern I’ve had I pop a question in their community or search and find an answer within a few minutes.

Can’t recommend it high enough. The Big 3 in Canada are legitimate crooks for how much they charge

  • Glitchy-9

I had an awful experience because I was getting errors and couldnÔÇÖt get any customer service to trouble shoot.

I went from a regular sim to an esim. While I was told it would work within a few hours and I got the message it transferred quickly, I was getting error codes.

I could figure out their forums but not how to send a support ticket. I did everything the tutorial guides and forums suggested to fix the problem. Once I figured out the ticket it was 2-3 days until I heard back.

When they wrote me I wouldÔÇÖve expected at least a couple suggestions on what I could try but instead they had to verify me which I responded to but never got a response back after. Granted I had figured out how to fix it myself before they even wrote me.

There was no way to call for immediate help and days for an online response was ridiculous but I kept them for now.

My husband went to Freedom and had issues there with the line working (took 8 hours to move number because of technical errors), but after doing something on line he was able to talk to a person.

IÔÇÖve been happy with my plan at Public but just donÔÇÖt expect good service

  • SpezSucks2023

    Previous public mobile user.

Telus network, though if you live in a low Telus reception area, or basement suite, you may want to consider another provider like Koodo.

Public Mobile does not support wifi calling.

  • mmss

I’ve been with them for yeas and have no complaints. I can provide a referral code in case anyone is switching.

  • Racepace

Switched from Fido. I think Fido/Rogers has better connection, in garages and elevators, Public loses connection where as Fido wouldnÔÇÖt, but other than that itÔÇÖs ok

  • Bulky-Window-1125

Supposedly they donÔÇÖt do international roaming.

So if youÔÇÖre travelling and for whatever reason need to receive an SMS for 2 factor authentication, you wonÔÇÖt get that text message.

  • Conscious_Yam3284

Been with them forever. Never needed customer service. Way better experience than Telus and Virgin.
