City of Syracuse Appoints New Preservation Planner

The City of Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh recently announced the appointment of Kate Auwaerter to the position of preservation planner in the office of zoning administration within the department of Neighborhood and Business Development. Auwaerter’s primary responsibilities will include managing the city’s preservation program, setting preservation planning priorities, and overseeing historic preservation efforts. Additionally, she will offer professional support to the Syracuse Landmark Preservation Board and supervise the city’s certified local government program.

With over 15 years of experience serving as the city’s preservation planner and public art coordinator, Auwaerter brings a wealth of knowledge to her new role. The establishment of the office of zoning administration in NBD in July 2023 solidified the preservation planner position as a full-time role. Currently, the city is in the process of recruiting a new public art coordinator to fill Auwaerter’s previous post.

Auwaerter’s extensive experience spans more than 25 years in historic preservation and planning across various sectors including private, nonprofit, and public organizations. She has held positions at influential institutions such as the Ohio Historic Preservation Office, the New York Main Street Alliance, the Downtown Committee of Syracuse, and the Center for Community Design Research at the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry.

She earned her master’s degree in historic preservation planning from Cornell University and her bachelor’s degree in history from Oberlin College. In addition to her professional accomplishments, Auwaerter serves as president and board member of the Thornden Park Association and as a board member of the Syracuse Parks Conservancy.
