    >She is taking AP classes, would she able to go to CC for one year due to saving time from AP credits and then transfer for a 2 year state university?

Yes, she can do anything she wants. Lots of people, even those that can afford college or get loans, go to CC for 2 years then transfer for a 4 year college. There are no cons. Your sister can also choose to go to a cheaper school (ie in state), and a public university. Your sister’s situation is not uncommon. She’ll have to take out loans but your parents will also have to take out loans in their name. It doesn’t matter who pays for them (your sister can pay your parents loans) but the package will be such that a large amount will be offered only to your parents.

Your sister may still qualify for some Federal loans especially if your DadÔÇÖs ÔÇ£bad financial decisionsÔÇØ are reflected on his tax returns. Once she gets accepted into a college, she can also appeal her financial aid package.

Getting scholarships for some in-state schools are not as difficult as people assume they are. Has she met with her high school guidance counselor? There are also a ton of scholarships out there and she just has to put the work into finding them. Lots of $500 scholarships can add up to a lot of money.

Going to a community college and transferring is also a great option. You will save a lot of money and the degree will be the same as someone who paid more for all 4 years. I even know of a couple of kids who moved to CA, went to a community college, worked at least 20 hrs/wk for in-state tuition, and then transferred to a top college like UCLA or Berkeley. From what I understand, California has guaranteed acceptance for in-state residents if they meet the requirements at a community college.

Your sister has a lot of options so tell her not to be discouraged.

Sorry to hear this. Besides ap, there are clep exams. Some universities will accept them.

Comm college then 4 year is a way. Some states they have reduced or free comm college for residents fyi. If you go this route, make sure the comm college and other credit like clep and ap count toward that 4 year uni. There is a site called transferology. My perception is that it also needs to be a public u .

My kids all got Federal Loans even with my husband’s salary. These are loans in their names and have nothing to do with us (parents). Just be sure to fill out the FAFSA each year before the deadline as well as whatever FA form the school requires, and then you can go to the school’s FA office and say you want the loans after they send out their FA offer. I think the are called unsubsidized Stafford Loans (5500 freshman, 6500 sophomore, 7500 junior and senior). Our youngest has a couple more years to go at our state university and each year she’s just called FA office and says she wants the max amount since they never give her that. Your sister will need to pay these back, but if she’s at a state university (two of mine were/are) it’ll be a huge help to get her through, and payments are going to be around 279 a month, if I remember right.

If she can do cc and then a state university where she lives at home that’ll be the most economical. Ours went away for school, and we found getting them an apartment or sharing a house with friends to be a lot more reasonable than dorm with a meal plan. Usually schools only have live on campus requirements for freshmen so she’ll be an upperclassman with all her credits.
