I have the same question. I somehow lucked out and got an interview for a role where Japanese isnÔÇÖt required (but they still want me to learn). IÔÇÖm not sure if I for the job, but IÔÇÖve had next to no luck finding anything similar. My previous bank back home even told me it would be nearly impossible to hire me in our Tokyo office without business level Japanese.

I hate to say this, but your post may be a fever dream without Japanese.UNLESS your specialized field is some sort of engineering skill. Then Japan is your oyster.

You should probably be aiming to be hired by a foreign company, possible outside of Japan.

Larger foreign IBs do have roles for monolingual English speakers but they are hard to come by. Not like the old days in the early 2000s when many had over 1,000 people on the ground here and tons of roles didnÔÇÖt need Japanese. You should seek out specialized headhunters for their advice. Make sure they have a track record that is relevant for your background so you donÔÇÖt waste time. Additionally, networking on LI via your current and past contacts to find connections to hiring managers here could possibly help but will take considerable time and persistence.

What can you do that somebody who speaks Japanese cannot?

I worked for about 3 years for Standard & Poor’s. To be precise, I was hired by S&P’s parent company (“The McGraw-Hill Companies, Inc” at the time, now “S&P Global Inc”), and I was doing IT infrastructure work for the group companies (S&P, Platts, McGraw-Hill Education, Businessweek).

Personally, I didn’t need to use Japanese at work, and my other team members and my direct boss were all in Singapore.

While my work wasn’t finance per se, my desk at the time was in the middle of the S&P team. Most of the staff were Japanese, but there were a couple of non-Japanese who didn’t speak Japanese.

Note that this was a very long time ago, during the time of the 2007-2008 financial crisis. Based on what ex-coworkers have told me, the work place is a bit more international now.

Be aware that this is just my personal experience. Other financial companies (especially Japanese banks) may have different work environments.

Mostly the Company from outside of japan but have branch here. It will be the best choice!

I don’t know what would be considered a finance company and what position you’re exactly looking at, but at least when I was looking (these were tech positions), some of the companies that had vacancies that didn’t require japanese were: KPMG, Bloomberg, SBI iirc.

Id try contacting several recruiters on LinkedIn and see if they have anything or if they know if such positions even exist.

It really depends on the job I think. For IT / quant positions Japanese banks definitely hire non Japanese speakers as it is super hard to hire locally. That being said from my experience it is not a very pleasant experience as you quickly feel isolated.
