If they arent a dodgy butcher which i assume they arent if they are your regular and local butcher. Call them explain the situation and i expect they will agree its a mistake and arrange the repayment.

If you have no joy with the butchers then Ring your bank, make them aware, they will contact your butchers bank and start the process to claim it back although the other part tends to have to agree to the reversal.

If you sent it to a completely incorrect, random persons account by mistake then that would be a different story however in this instance im 95% sure you will get it sorted and get your money back.

  • LoudMusic_

Hey man, I’m sure they’ll sort this out for you. I wouldn’t worry to much just give them a call when they open.

  • intrigue_investor

You’ll be fine, just call them

If they don’t return it then send them a letter before action, and then begin a money claim (formerly small claims court), unless they wind down the company in the meantime you’ll get it back (which is highly unlikely, and even then a director can be held personally liable in some cases)

But basically you’re worrying over nothing imo

HeÔÇÖs down the abattoir having a weekend bender

  • marko1908

You’ve received good advice already but I would just add to not leave your savings in your current account, regardless of returns and interest etc, just from a safety point of view.

  • Inchkeaton

I once paid around 5k for a 50 quid meal at some restaurant, for similar reasons to yours. Got paid back pretty quickly, the waitress was mortified as she input the figure (and I didn’t check it before putting my pin in).

  • unholyangel4

And just to give peace of mind, you are **legally** entitled to the excess back.

Your contract price was 42.74. That was what was agreed by both parties. Making a mistake during performance of the contract (performance = you making payment, because that was your obligation under the contract) doesn’t change what the agreed contract was.

  • ihateusernames2701

Hopefully to reassure you – I previously ran my own business and had a customer make the same mistake, with roughly the same amount. I contacted her and sent it straight back as soon as I could. I’m sure it will all be resolved once they open. Good luck

  • stuartblows

While we’re on the topic, can I recommend you look into savings accounts for your savings? Its not a good idea to keep your savings in the same account you pay your bills from. It would protect you from things like this from happening again in the future, plus savings accounts offer you better protection from fraud.
Assuming that your money is in a current account that is… Just a thought.

  • jdjwright

I can see a lot of people here saying the butchers will refund it, but just be aware that what youÔÇÖve done looks like a really common scam. The way the scam works is someone uses stolen bank information to overpay for goods or services, then asks for a refund. The honest business sends the money back, then a few days later the original payment is reversed as fraud and the business is out the whole amount.

All this to say donÔÇÖt be surprised if the butchers tells you to take it up with the bank to reverse. That wouldnÔÇÖt be them trying to cheat you, but following the advice that many people have given on this subreddit when the roles are reversed

    Edit: spelling

  • Fluffy-Astronomer604

Relax mate, the butcher will refund and itÔÇÖll be sorted rapid.

  • Far_Store4085

There is a process at the bank called PIE (payment in error), you raise a claim and they’ll pass it to the receiving bank who will then contact the account holder.

Providing they don’t claim it’s money owed it will be refunded, but don’t expect it to be quick turnaround.

  • drefze3

I suspect the conversation will go something like this:

You: “Hey, I was on a mad one Saturday night and accidentally sent you 4 grand instead of 47 quid. Any chance I could have it back?”

Butcher: “Sure mate, let me send it back”

Thirty seconds later you will wonder what all the worry was about.

  • aerfen

Agree with what everyone else here is saying – you will get your money back.

While to most people nearly £5k is a lot of money, to a moderately successful small business it is not. It is not a figure worth risking reputation or legal damage for.

I’m certain that as soon as you talk to the owner, you’ll both have a good laugh and they’ll immediately return the money.

  • catjellycat

My husband, when unwell, transferred a few grand to the company we bought our shed from (over a year previously!) rather than my account. It was a Friday night.

We rang Saturday morning and after ringing us back and confirming it wasnÔÇÖt a scam of some kind, they transferred it straight back.

  • DominicJ1984

I once paid one of my Suppliers £100k and then paid them £100k again a week later, even w9rse they were in China.
Luckily we had the cashflow and left it with them for future orders.

It’s quite common, either you will trade through it, but that’s unlikely on 100x, or they will send it back next week

  • generic-username9067

This genuinely happens fairly often in terms of business to business transactions, it would almost be worth more hassle for them to not refund it from an accounts perspective than to send it back to you.

If it was 10mil, you might think of closing the business and legging it, but to a business that is fairly well established and is interested i maintaining customer loyalty by service, they will absolutely send it back to you, though maybe on a weekly payrun rather than an instant transfer.

  • Financial_Excuse_429

You do have the receipt right? So it shouldn’t be hard to prove the mistake & they would see in the invoices the mistake surely. Contact in writing & possibly go personally & chat to the manager.

  • FunSpunker9000

IÔÇÖm sure the butchers will be in touch to see if you actually want a full cow worth of steak or not.

  • SmashedWorm64

Keeping an overpayment is illegal in the UK. It is considered an AML issue.

If your Butcher does not resolve this then your bank will. If your bank are useless then report it to the NCA.

  • sparkysparks666

As others I’m sure it will be fine but just curious if this payment flagged up for extra checks when you made it? It should have looked abnormal to the bank.

  • AloHiWhat

Decimal point is the most important

  • HybridXS

    u/superspacecakes how’d you get on?

  • Ormals_Fast_Food

Call the butcher, have a laugh about it, call your bank say sorry, then get your money back.
Then buy the butchers a nice bottle of champers to say thanks

  • agilelion00

Not sure this post is real. That’s over daily limit for online baking.
Also why you got so much in your current account?
