Campbell University Students Win Templeton Business Ethics Case Competition

DELAND, FLA. ÔÇö A team of students from Campbell UniversityÔÇÖs Lundy-Fetterman School of Business placed first among 16 public and private colleges in the national Templeton Business Ethics Case Competition, held Feb. 23 at Stetson University.

Mackenzie Campbell of Uniontown, Ohio, and Richard Hager of Sanford ÔÇö both members of CampbellÔÇÖs Truist Business Scholars Program ÔÇö took home the $2,500 prize.

CampbellÔÇÖs victory marks its fourth win in the past seven years in the Templeton Business Case Ethics Competition. The teams participated in a 20-minute presentation format, followed by a five-minute Q&A session. Semifinalists competed in shorter eight-minute presentations for the top spot.

The competition revolved around a scenario of a fictitious university grappling with how to address student safety after two on-campus overdose deaths. Teams acted as consultants hired by the university to analyze the financial, legal, and ethical implications of providing naloxone and other harm-reduction measures to students. The Campbell team advocated for the university to offer Narcan and fentanyl test strips campus-wide, citing public health data showing a rise in overdose deaths, particularly from synthetic opioids like fentanyl.

Dr. Mark A. Steckbeck, the team’s mentor, emphasized the significance of addressing real-life tragedies on college campuses. He commended Mackenzie and Richard for advocating student welfare and ethical decision-making.

Campbell, a first-year student, shared, ÔÇ£The challenge enhanced my critical thinking and public speaking abilities, allowing me to approach issues ethically. Winning this competition marked an unforgettable moment in my undergraduate journey at Campbell.ÔÇØ

Hager, also a first-year student, reflected on the competition as a valuable learning experience in ethical business evaluations and presentation skills. He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to develop reasoning skills and engage with ethical dilemmas.

Noteworthy participants in this year’s contest included Penn State University, University of Illinois Urbana Champaign, U.S. Naval Academy, University of Florida, Florida State University, Iowa State University, University of Massachusetts Amherst, and Boston College.
