Blommer Chocolate Company Announces Closure of Chicago Plant

Blommer Chocolate Company, a nearly century-old Chicago institution, made a significant announcement on Friday regarding the closure of its iconic Fulton River District manufacturing plant. Despite the closure, Blommer will be investing $100 million in its remaining production facilities in East Greenville, Pennsylvania, Union City, California, and Campbellford, Ontario.

Specifically, the Campbellford site will receive a $60 million upgrade to enhance its capabilities and make it one of the largest confectionery coating manufacturing facilities in North America by April 2026. Additionally, over $40 million will be allocated towards improving operational efficiency, reliability, and implementing automated processing and packaging equipment at the East Greenville and Union City facilities.

The uncertain future of the Chicago plant stems back to the company’s acquisition by Japanese ingredient company Fuji Oil Holding in 2018. Despite earlier plans to expand manufacturing operations at the Fulton River District site, the decision has now been made to close the plant while enhancing production elsewhere.

Established in 1939, Blommer has grown to become the largest cocoa bean processor in North America, serving industries such as confectionery, baking, and dairy. As of late Friday afternoon, a timeline for the plant closure had not yet been announced.
