In October 1933, Virginio Calarco, Gini’s grandfather, started Calarco’s Restaurant after running a small grocery store during the Great Depression. He closed the store and turned it into a bar and restaurant. Prohibition had just ended, which allowed Calarco’s to thrive.

During that time, prices were significantly lower than they are today. A 12-ounce glass of beer cost a nickel, a shot of liquor was 15 cents, a hamburger was 15 cents, a full spaghetti and meatball meal was 35 cents, and a T-bone steak dinner was 75 cents.

Virginio and his wife Jenny Squillace Calarco, whom he married in 1915, lived upstairs over the bar with their six children. Virginio dedicated almost 50 years of his life to the railroad as a track maintenance laborer while simultaneously running the restaurant with the help of his children. His son Vinnie started bartending at the age of 13 when the bar opened, and Vinnie and his wife Charlotte became the second generation to own and operate the business.

Following in her father’s footsteps, Gini started working at the restaurant at the age of 14, washing dishes and waitressing in the dining room. By the time she was 18, she had acquired the skills to be a cook.

After Gini took over the business, her three children also began working at the restaurant, waitressing, washing dishes, and cooking. While two of her children pursued different careers, her daughter focused on being a baker and opened Buttercream Bakery in downtown.

Gini enjoys baking herself and takes pride in making pies and desserts. She has formed strong relationships with many people in the community, as her father always emphasized that when customers visit Calarco’s, they become family.

CalarcoÔÇÖs Restaurant is Westfield’s oldest continuously operating eating establishment. Throughout the years, Gini has made various upgrades to the building and menu. It is a place filled with nostalgia, with many historic photos hanging on the walls.

In celebration of its 90th anniversary, CalarcoÔÇÖs will be hosting a special event from October 20-22. The festivities will include live music on Friday and Saturday nights, trivia questions, and door prizes for winners.
