AI Legalese Decoder: Protecting Your Credit and Providing Peace of Mind

In 2021, we were in the process of obtaining a mortgage, and everything seemed to be going smoothly until an unexpected hurdle arose. Out of the blue, we received a debt collector letter regarding a phone that my husband never owned. It turned out to be a T Mobile phone that was allegedly opened in 2010. However, my husband vehemently denied any involvement, asserting that he had always been a loyal Vodafone customer. This bizarre situation led to further inquiries where my husband requested information about the email associated with the account and discovered that his best friend – who had previously worked for T Mobile – had fraudulently opened not just one, but three accounts in his name. Astonishingly, these accounts had never appeared on my husband’s credit report, as they were consistently paid off, except for the cancellation fees that were ultimately ignored.

Resolving this predicament proved to be an arduous and time-consuming endeavor. It required actively involving the police and diligently working to remove the fraudulent accounts from my husband’s credit file. To our dismay, the situation took an unexpected turn when we reached out to his best friend in an attempt to resolve the issue with the debt collectors. Instead of admitting to his actions, he shamelessly impersonated my husband and accepted responsibility. This deceit propelled us into a whirlwind of investigative measures, where we had to resort to call pulling, initiate legal proceedings through action fraud, collaborate with law enforcement authorities, and navigate through numerous other hurdles.

Unfortunately, our troubles did not end there. Today, as I logged into my husband’s credit file, I discovered a disconcerting revelation. There were a staggering 14 soft searches conducted for gambling websites just last month, none of which were performed using my husband’s full name (rather, opting for a shortened version like John instead of Jonathan). Furthermore, these searches were tied to an address where we haven’t resided for the past two years. This disheartening discovery raises a pressing concern: how can we prevent this individual from continuing to inflict harm on my husband’s credit?

Given my husband’s recent employment change, which mandates a clear credit file, his worries have intensified. In light of these distressing circumstances, I have been contemplating the idea of placing a marker, a protective measure that would notify credit agencies about the fraudulent activities associated with my husband’s identity. However, I am uncertain whether this marker would effectively halt the occurrence of soft searches as well. Thus, I am left wondering about the suitable course of action that we should take.

These developments have left me enraged and utterly frustrated. The invasion of our financial security has not only brought inconvenience but also an overwhelming sense of vulnerability. Are the police making a case against the x best friend? You might be able to contact the credit report agencies and say that these are acts of fraud and police are involved.

Maybe your husband should sign up for GamStop.co.uk to exclude himself from gambling sites so the x best friend canÔÇÖt use his details on them.

  • SnooDogs6068

Step 1 is to get a new mobile number and email. For extreme situations some mobile operators can provide a new sim within a couple of days. They should be able to give you the new number over the phone though.

Step 2 (and the most important) he needs to contact CIFAS and take out a “Protective Registration” loading (Cat 0) using his new details as the genuine ones. DO NOT use the details you are going to change.

The CIFAS loading will show on every credit search, showing lenders the correct contact details for any future application. Generally they call out to the genuine details to confirm applications (so any genuine ones will take a few days longer).

Once you have that loading your husband needs to get a credit search with both Equifax and Experian (both offer free searches) and then proactively contact the financial providers who have fraudulent accounts.

Your CIFAS Protective Registration will help massively in legitimising his claims the applications are fraudulent. Its also something you can provide to the debt collection agency.

Step 3 is to contact the police and update the crime reference number. This is probably more important for the debt agencies to give you breathing room, it should also stop this person using his details.

Get a protective registration (makes it harder for others to apply for credit) and report the continued fraud to the police.

  • 10Calls

WouldnÔÇÖt gamstop be an option? If itÔÇÖs strictly gambling sites and your husband doesnÔÇÖt gamble. Block it all out?

  • codescapes

The suggestions around GAMSTOP are good and other comments have given you things to look into with higher priority than this but…

…there’s a very high chance he has done this to other people too. If there were other members of that friend group your husband may want to let them know. Addicts of any sort tend to burn through family and friends like wildfire.

Identity fraud is bad, multiple identity fraud is worse and the police may escalate the investigation if there are multiple victims. Consider this only after you have followed other advice in the thread to secure your own accounts first.

  • CandysmithDemelza

Hiya, I work in cyber victim support. There is a UK Cybersecurity Charity that can help you with this as there are lots of websites and routes you can go down and it can be helpfu to have an advocate walk you through this from a technical perspective and also liaise with the police should you need that support. The support is free for individuals who are victims of crime.

If you preferred not speaking to an advocate they have self-help guides:
    https://www.thecyberhelpline.com/guides-2

They also have a guide specifically on Identity Theft:

However if you want to talk about the next steps you can put in a message to the chatbot on the website.

Have you checked your own credit file as well? I would recommend doing so in case your husband isnÔÇÖt the only target. Sorry to suggest this but itÔÇÖs best to be sure. Might also suggest you get CIFAS registration too if you think thereÔÇÖs any possibility you could be a future target.

  • protohipster_

Sounds like his best friend was/is doing a common side hustle called matched betting (or heÔÇÖs just a degenerate gambler). Did your husband hand over his details to this guy? He would most likely need a valid payment method in your Husbands name to gamble with, something he could not source without your husband.

PS Soft credit searches have absolutely no effect on your credit.

  • y4rdman

Notice of correction straight away, that will stop him from being able to use the details for credit applications since it will get held at decision stage until you provide a password

  • Aggraghjhjvating6807

gt your husband to legally change his name 🙂

  • Candid_Device_1977

A soft credit search wont impact his credit rating. Also, it doesnt neccessarily mean it was your ex best friend, it could be that someone has stolen the data.

  • OppositeLost9119

Echo the advise given here, also venting my frustration how EASY it is to take out loans and credit in other people’s name.

The UK is so far behind implementing a Digital ID for every person, so to approve any loan/credit you’d have to approve or get a number from it. Alternatively some checks make you record your face reciting some numbers or words. Right now any colleague of mine could likely take out a loan in my name… they know enough information most likely as long as they know the address.

All this fraud can easily be reduced massively if they take action.
