Neighbors in the Tallahassee neighborhood are stepping up to be advocates for minority women in Gadsden County.

One organization that is making a difference in helping minority women succeed in opening small businesses is the Big Bend Minority Chamber of Commerce.

“Some of my friends are members of the Big Bend Minority Chamber and they recommended that I become a member. They assured me that it would be a great resource for me,” shared Estelle Smith, CEO of Serenity Health Solutions.

Estelle is not only a successful business owner but also a proud member of BBMC, an organization dedicated to serving minority women-owned businesses.

“I have gained a lot of benefits from being a part of this chamber,” she added.

The partnership between Big Bend Minority Chamber and the Gadsden County Chamber of Commerce aims to collaborate and leverage their assets to support small businesses in Gadsden County.

David Gardner, the executive director of the Gadsden County Chamber of Commerce, emphasizes the importance of this partnership, especially with the increasing population in the area and the need for resources for minority small business owners.

Data from the U.S. Small Business Administration indicates that in 2022, 19.2% of businesses in Florida were owned by minority business owners.

“Gadsden County offers a rural environment that is conducive to business growth,” Gardner noted.

BBMC serves minority women in five counties, including Leon, Wakulla, Jefferson, Franklin, and Gadsden, providing networking opportunities and valuable tips on starting a business.

Antonio Jefferson, the president of BBMC, highlights the unique position of women in minority-owned businesses and the need to collaborate with community stakeholders and other chambers to bring resources and support to the entire business ecosystem.

“It takes a village to support small businesses,” Jefferson expressed, emphasizing the community-driven approach of BBMC.

The partnership with BBMC has helped Estelle achieve her goal of expanding her business to the Gretna neighborhood, addressing the specific needs of the region.

“The need is there, that’s the reason why. Because there is a great need to provide resources to that actual region,” Estelle shared.

BBMC continues to strive towards bringing more resources and support to minority women business owners in the neighborhood, fostering a culture of opportunity and success.
