Many of my peers in Harrisburg have made it their mission to undermine small businesses, the very foundation of our economy, and jeopardize the livelihoods of their own constituents. To make matters worse, certain politicians have prioritized the interests of large, internationally-owned casino conglomerates over the well-being of local VFWs, American Legions, volunteer firefighters, and other fraternal organizations.

The Attack on Skill Games: Dispelling Misinformation

The latest assault on small businesses comes in the form of a proposed ban on skill games. Contrary to the claims of legislators influenced by casinos, skill games are not gambling machines. This fact is indisputable, as every court in our commonwealth that has examined these games has deemed them legal. Therefore, let us cease pretending that this issue revolves around anything other than creating a monopoly for casinos at the expense of Main Street Pennsylvanians.

To the small businesses throughout Pennsylvania, it is paramount to recognize that these legislators do not prioritize your survival. They do not concern themselves with whether you can meet your financial obligations, pay your bills, make payroll, or provide for your families.

It is disheartening to note that these same politicians advocated for COVID-related closures, capacity limits, vaccine mandates, and other anti-small business legislation only a few years ago. When will their actions suffice?

The Vitality of Skill Games for Small Businesses

Skill games have proven to be a crucial source of revenue for countless small businesses across Pennsylvania. These games provide an entertaining option for customers who, in turn, spend money on food, beverages, and other games offered by these establishments. The funds generated from skill games enable these small businesses to cover bills, invest in location upgrades, provide employee benefits, support community events, make charitable donations, and much more.

Contrary to misconceptions, skill games are found in reputable family-run businesses, including restaurants, bars, fraternal organizations, and fire halls. These establishments are deeply embedded in local neighborhoods and serve as community hubs. They are not hidden in shady underground casinos, as some misleadingly suggest.

It is worth highlighting that the skill game industry has consistently advocated for regulation and taxation. Implementing proper regulations not only benefits the commonwealth by generating substantial tax revenue annually but also empowers law enforcement to combat illegal gambling effectively.

Those who oppose skill games often accentuate the absence of regulation. However, a straightforward solution exists – regulate them. It is ironic that the same entities complaining about the lack of regulation are the ones obstructing its implementation.

Even three years after the pandemic, these establishments still suffer from the impact of inflation and staffing shortages, primarily due to ill-conceived policies enforced by Democrats in Washington, D.C., and Harrisburg.

Simultaneously, restaurants hold immense significance as vital community spaces. The pandemic taught us the value of these establishments, where we gather to share meals, enjoy the company of loved ones, and support various causes. Beyond their social importance, restaurants serve as major economic drivers, employing numerous individuals and contributing significantly to tax revenue. It is essential to explore every avenue to support and protect these establishments.

Veterans organizations also heavily rely on skill games for essential income. VFW halls and American Legion posts across the commonwealth have utilized skill game revenue to finance renovations, expand services for their members, and sustain their workforce. Providing spaces where veterans can foster camaraderie among peers should be the least we can do to acknowledge their selfless service.

Lastly, the assertion that skill games harm the state lottery or casinos is baseless. This tired narrative lacks any factual foundation. Research has consistently indicated that skill games actually benefit the lottery and have no adverse impact on casinos.

Avoiding Monopoly and Ensuring a Fair Marketplace

Proponents of the skill game ban attempt to instill fear in the public, disregarding any notion of healthy competition. Should we encourage large corporations to engage in political strong-arming whenever they feel slightly threatened? Is this truly reflective of American values?

To my fellow lawmakers, let us reflect upon our legacies as we approach the end of our political careers. Would you rather be remembered for supporting colossal gaming corporations or for championing struggling small businesses and fraternal clubs across Pennsylvania?
