They will ask if you want direct deposit or direct express card. If you don’t plan on opening a checking account then opt for the direct express card. I think you should really just open a chime account or something easy. At least for the time being. I did hear that they credit you the funds a few days earlier than other banks. I’m still using direct express a year after approval although I did recently give SSA the direct deposit info that I want the payments to start going to.
The cards work as mentioned but I would really suggest going to a nearby major bank and open up an account. These days with direct deposit(like you will get from SSI)there are no fees at most banks. And these forums are filled with people making complaints about the cards and their lousy customer service. Having an account at a major bank, especially one with a branch near you, makes dealing with any issues much easier.
If you don’t have a account they will send you a direct express card and your funds will be loaded each month on that. Maybe you can call them and let them know. Or they may wait until you get your approval not sure how it works I just know that is what they use whatever you do never get a NetSpend card so many hidden fees it’s ridiculous
Do not go with direct express unless you have to. So many problems with them.
Open a checking account. Easy peasy. Last I looked, banks like Ally and Capital One offer no fee accounts. You can open online.
You can open a basic checking account online with many banks.
If for some reason you can’t do that, PayPal always has a direct deposit and if you open a PayPal account, they will give you a routing and account number to use
Most banks have a ÔÇ£transactionÔÇØ checking account with bare bones features and a small monthly fee for government benefits direct Deposit. US BankÔÇÖs version is a safe debit account.
Credit unions are a good low cost option as well.
Do Not get direct express.
Get a prepaid card. ThereÔÇÖs a million of them available. WM, Chime, etc. Stau away from CashApp though.
Set up a bank acct
You can open an account on Ally . Its an entirely online bank. I think as long as you make a first deposit within something like ten days you are fine. Don’t recall exact.
Definitely open some type of account, I recommend a bank you can walk into, and a credit union. Direct Express is horrible, just read this [story.](https://www.dallasnews.com/news/watchdog/2017/11/30/direct-express-a-u-s-government-program-that-puts-benefits-on-a-debit-card-doesnt-always-work/?outputType=amp)
