We also weren’t seeing the growth we wanted on YouTube at the time, and felt like we were spinning our wheels. However, we didn’t want to give up. So, we decided to start a new project, Samor, with the goal of getting it published in 90 days. It was meant to be a quick, simple project that players could enjoy for a few hours at a low cost. We hoped to make some money in the process, create a new devlog series on YouTube, and most importantly, have a published game under our belt.

I’ll be honest, part of the reason I wanted to do this challenge was to alleviate some of the impostor syndrome I was feeling. Without anything published under my name, I often battled with the thought that I wasn’t a “real” game developer. However, now it’s been 82 months since we started, way beyond the intended 90-day timeline.

In this video, I want to have an honest conversation about the development process of Samor. Game development can be an emotional journey for many developers, and I’m no exception. I’m feeling embarrassed that we’re so far from our original completion date, and that the game still has a long way to go. I want to share what’s been going on, talk about the delays, and discuss the mistakes we’ve made and how we plan to improve moving forward.

Initially, I planned to release Samor in the summer of 2024. The good news is that we’re not giving up. We’ve been making progress on the game, and my excitement for it is at an all-time high. I want to bring you all up to speed with the development process and ask for your support.

So, why has it taken so long? I’ve come to terms with the fact that my lack of project management skills has been a major setback. Additionally, I’ve learned some hard lessons along the way. While I initially thought it was scope creep that was causing the delays, it’s not. Every feature that’s in the game now was planned from day one. It’s simply me not being very good at estimating how long it takes to create certain features and ensuring they are polished and complete with all the necessary options.

For example, a seemingly simple task like creating an enemy wave spawner system ended up taking much longer than expected. What I thought would take an afternoon took me a solid week. There are so many nuances and considerations that go into these tasks that I hadn’t accounted for initially.
