MARIA: Welcome back. The Biden administration is proposing a new rule that would expand overtime pay requirements. Under this rule, employers would be required to pay overtime to workers who make less than $55,000 a year, which is well above the current threshold of $35,000 set by the Trump administration. Additionally, the Biden administration is proposing automatic increases to the salary level every year. Today, I have Utah Congressman Burgess Owens joining me to discuss this issue. Thank you for being here, Congressman Owens.

CONGRESSMAN OWENS: Good morning, Maria. I’m looking forward to our conversation.

MARIA: Business leaders have expressed concerns that setting the salary requirements too high could exacerbate staffing challenges for small businesses, which have been struggling due to the tight labor market. What are your thoughts on this?

CONGRESSMAN OWENS: Well, these challenges arise for small businesses when you have individuals in government who have no understanding of how small businesses operate. In the free market, we have innovators and risk-takers who make decisions based on customer needs. But bureaucrats like Biden, who have never run a business, easily make rules and laws that negatively impact this vital sector of our economy. It’s concerning that they target small business owners, as it ultimately affects the middle class. Small businesses are the backbone of our country, and they strive to secure a bright future for their children. They are also the group that values individual liberty and wants to be left alone to run their businesses and lives. This threatens the hard left, and their efforts to impose rules and regulations aim to destroy the middle class, the very group that understands and cherishes freedom. We should question their motives when they put such rules in place.

MARIA: So, you believe it’s more about power and taking away individual freedom?

CONGRESSMAN OWENS: Absolutely, Maria. If we analyze how everything this administration has done so far has impacted the American people, we can see that it goes against the principles of making our nation great. They undermine our hopes, dreams, and optimism. When it comes to education, they fail in teaching our kids what made us who we are as a nation ÔÇô the risk-takers and innovators. It is clear that their actions are driven by the thirst for power. However, I have faith in the American people, and I believe they will push back against these abuses of power.

MARIA: There is certainly a lot of pushback happening. A conservative watchdog group, Americans for Public Trust, claims that the Department of Transportation has been delaying the release of Secretary Pete Buttigieg’s flight records for taxpayer-funded trips. They filed a request for the flight logs last November but have not received them yet. What are your thoughts on this, considering your role in the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee?

CONGRESSMAN OWENS: This is how these individuals operate. They shamelessly break the rules and fail to fulfill their obligations when it comes to transparency. As you mentioned earlier, the power of the purse is crucial. When we have the majority, we must use our control over the appropriations process to withhold funding when these administrative bureaucrats fail to do their jobs. It doesn’t surprise me that we encounter such instances where the Biden administration withholds information. There are so many areas where we seek information, such as the Hunter Biden case, and they consistently deny us access because they simply don’t feel obliged to comply.

MARIA: Speaking of the power of the purse, how do you plan on accomplishing your legislative goals in the limited time before the government runs out of funding? Your colleagues are conducting an investigation into Joe Biden for potential money laundering and bribery, but they are facing stonewalling. How do you proceed in such a situation?

CONGRESSMAN OWENS: I will support the continuing resolution to ensure that the government can continue its operations. However, I recognize that we have a lot on our plate with a short timeframe. It will likely be impossible to accomplish everything within the next two or three weeks. That’s why we need a strategic approach and make sure we prioritize the people’s work. Although dealing with a government that doesn’t believe in the rule of law can be frustrating, we must think strategically and not get sidetracked. By the time we come back next year, we can concentrate on our priority issues and strengthen our majority.

MARIA: People are frustrated with the way the law seems to be applied differently for Biden compared to Trump. You recently endorsed former President Trump for the 2024 presidential election, stating that he has helped the black community more than any other president in your lifetime. A video has gone viral of black Americans speaking out against what is happening to Trump, suggesting that they might unite against him. Florida Congressman Byron Donalds mentioned that black men are already starting to support Trump due to the Democrats’ stance on issues like transgender rights. What are your thoughts on this?

CONGRESSMAN OWENS: Maria, this is an area I have been anticipating for years. I have always believed that to reclaim our country, we need the support of black and Hispanic Americans who historically haven’t had a seat at the table. It is great to see that Black Americans are now realizing that the Democratic Party has never been a true friend to them. Democrats have perpetuated hopelessness, destroyed family businesses, and dismantled families themselves, all of which have been detrimental to black Americans. The corruption and unfairness are becoming more evident, and people are starting to see through it. It is crucial for us to empathize with the struggles that black Americans have faced for decades and lead them towards a better path. Donald Trump’s presidency has acted as a catalyst for this shift in perspective.

MARIA: The Democrats have assumed that they have black America’s support secured. What are your thoughts on this?

CONGRESSMAN OWENS: Maria, the events unfolding now are proving them wrong. Black Americans, especially black men, are starting to question the Democratic Party’s positions. The Democrats’ tolerance for allowing transgender children and other issues that go against our traditional values has created a divide. Black men, like all fathers, want their children to have a stable future and believe that their boys should be boys and their girls should be girls. Additionally, Joe Biden’s presidency has shown its disastrous impact on the economy. These factors contribute to a growing skepticism towards the Democratic Party among black men. It is time for them to open their eyes and see the truth.

MARIA: Thank you for sharing your insights, Congressman Owens. We appreciate your time today.

CONGRESSMAN OWENS: My pleasure, Maria. Thank you for having me.

Rep. Burgess Owens, a Republican from Utah, recently appeared on the show ‘Mornings with Maria’ to share his thoughts on two important topics: the Biden administration’s plan to expand overtime pay requirements and the upcoming 2024 election. During the interview, Owens expressed his concerns about the potential impact of the administration’s move on businesses and workers.

To provide some context, the Biden administration is considering changes to the current overtime pay regulations. These changes could result in more employees being eligible for overtime pay, which would require employers to pay them time-and-a-half for any hours worked beyond the standard 40 hours per week. While this might seem like a positive development for workers, Owens believes that it could have unintended consequences.

One possible consequence of expanding overtime pay requirements is that some businesses may decide to reduce workers’ hours or hire fewer employees to offset the increased labor costs. This could lead to a decrease in job opportunities and potentially harm the overall economy. Owens argues that instead of relying solely on government mandates, it would be more beneficial to create an environment that encourages business growth and job creation organically.

Moving on to the topic of the 2024 election, Owens shared his thoughts on the importance of this upcoming event. As a Republican, he emphasized the need for conservatives to come together and support a candidate who can effectively advance their values and principles. He believes that the 2024 election will play a crucial role in shaping the future of the country and determining the direction it takes in areas such as economic policy, national security, and social issues.

Owens concluded by highlighting the significance of being informed and engaged citizens. He encouraged viewers to stay updated with the latest news and developments, urging them to follow reliable news sources like Fox Business Network. By staying informed, individuals can make educated decisions and actively participate in the democratic process.

Overall, Rep. Burgess Owens voiced his concerns about the potential consequences of expanding overtime pay requirements while also stressing the importance of the upcoming 2024 election. As a representative of the Republican party, his views provide insights into the perspectives of conservatives in the United States. To stay informed on these and other important topics, Owens recommends following reliable news sources like Fox Business Network.
