Universally, the Capital One SavorOne students is a great card for the majority of college students. Mastercard with no annual fee + no foreign transaction fees.

3x on dining, groceries (excludes superstores like Walmart® and Target®), entertainment, and streaming services.

Whatever you end up choosing, id create a self limit of credit no more than 2-3k. You want to build credit but not debt with rolling balances every month.

That being said, focus on a card with decent cash back on every day purchases you make. You don’t need a hotel or airplane associated card and AMEX fees would be high. Maybe a discover/master/visa with quality cash back on gas/groceries

I’d say pick up a 2% cashback card with no annual fee. You get cashback on every purchase, no categories to worry about.

There are a lot of choices here; Fidelity Visa, SDFCU Premium Cash+, US Alliance Signature, PayPal Cashback(3% on PayPal transactions, 2% elsewhere).

Here’s a good reference for credit card rewards:

As this is your first card, you need to never close this card or it will tank your credit score. This card will be the one determining your credit age. So, don’t open a card that has an annual fee. You don’t need to use this card consistently forever; if you end up getting better cards in the future you can just put one purchase on here every 6 months to a year to keep the bank from closing it.

Don’t ever hold a balance on any credit card (except maybe one with a 0% interest on purchases period, if you’re careful). Holding a balance does not help your credit score at all. Only buy things on the card that you can afford to pay off by the payment due date. You should set up autopay to automatically pay your statement balance by the due date; this will ensure you never pay any interest.

If you are denied for a credit card(say, this first one as you don’t have much credit history), you can apply for another card from a different bank the same day
The new card application won’t see the hard pull on your credit score from the first card, as it won’t show up the same day on your credit report. So, feel free to keep applying for a “first credit card” on the same day until someone approves you.

You could also try to get more than one card now, maybe go for a Chase Freedom Flex, Discover IT, Bank of America Cash Rewards, US Bank Cash+; something with rewards on categories you’ll use and no annual fee. This will increase your available credit and increase your average credit age going forward, two ways to boost your score.

Note that after you do this your credit score will be low for some months afterwards, but it will begin to climb as you make on time payments. It takes time to build credit.

Keep track of your credit score using a free service like Credit Karma; you’ll be able to see which credit factors are holding you back. The main one for now will be credit age.

The Discover Student Credit Card is a fantastic choice. It has rotating 5% categories that rotate anywhere from on groceryÔÇÖs, gas, amazon, and so on. Every other purchase is 1% back. I just graduated college and have 3 credit cards to leverage cash back rewards, and the Discover was easily my favorite with the 5% categories. I recommended this card for anyone starting out ti build their credit in college.

Whichever card you choose, remember to keep your credit utilization down and make your payments on time.
