We used big steel box and it was about 1/3 the cost of movers and worked well. They dropped 2x large seacans in on our driveway and we loaded and secured the items. They picked them up and dropped them on the road in front of our new house. We got permits to keep the seacans on the road from our new municipality for like $60 and we called big box when it was done and they picked them up.
They’re all scams, but they have to be. Any company that quotes a fair rate will be too high and get no business.
Hire them to load your U-Haul and drive it yourself, the hire labourers on the other side.
Moving is a bit of a scam business. If you go with someone make sure it is on personal positive experience from someone you trust.
Otherwise stick to the big names like AMJ Campbell (expensive).

Seems too low for that distance. I received quotes for $1,500 moving between Ottawa and Toronto a few years back. Friends that moved from Toronto to Alberta & BC were quoted around $5,000 – $8,000 (price range is due to different years, 2008 vs 2013, and distances as well as amount of stuff).
We moved from Ottawa to Thunder Bay a few years ago and considered using a long haul mover.
The biggest thing that turned us off was that your stuff will get moved around more than once between various trucks and sometimes even trains. Additionally, your stuff may actually be put on a truck with other people’s stuff which begs for stuff to go missing.
Many reviews had people saying their stuff went missing or was damaged. Additionally, the moving company doesn’t usually indicate a specific day they will deliver your stuff, but rather a range of days which could be upwards of a week (or longer).
In some reviews, i have heard of shenanigans the movers will pull regarding the weight of your stuff and of course there is no way to verify that.
As someone else suggested, we just rented a huge uhaul and did the move ourselves.
I would suggest hiring a big legit moving company rather than trying to do it cheaply (unless you can pack all your stuff in a uhaul and drive it yourself). There are so many stories of cheap moving companies holding stuff hostage and demanding more money at the destination. It costs a lot to move all your stuff across the country (IÔÇÖve done it). I moved my furniture (2 bedroom townhouse worth of stuff) from ON to BC 4.5 years ago and all the quotes were around $5000. At $1000 itÔÇÖs definitely a scam.
The cheaper the cost, the likelier a scam.

We moved from BC to PEI and used Great Canadian Van Lines. They were awesome. They packed everything from our house into the truck and unpacked it as well. They told us that the person packing the truck would be the same person who drives and unloads it. That same person gets a bonus if they don’t lose/break anything, so there’s high incentives that they treat your items with care. We used them as a third party to ship our car by rail as well. It was on the more expensive side but it was really worth it for the peace of mind.
We also didn’t need to move all our stuff into boxes. They said they could pack our items as is and bubble wrap them while putting them into the truck.
What is nuts is that in Japan, movers do all the packing (as in packing your stuff into boxes) and unpacking as well!

Big steel box container.. not a rip off and just charges you one price (depending on size of container and distance).. also they drop it at your place and you determine how long you want to take to load it,, we had it for 5 days to load and pack nicely, before they came and got it for transport.

Accountant here. FWIW a couple years ago I had a client move from Montreal to Vancouver. They had a 3BR house and it cost them roughly 9k. I’d expect 5-9k for a move of that length.
We moved from Ottawa to Vancouver and used AMJ Campbell. We had a 6 month old baby and 2 cats. Doing it solo wasnÔÇÖt an option.
They were good with only 2 pieces of furniture getting minor scratches.
The price wasnÔÇÖt cheap though. If itÔÇÖs for work, you can use it as a tax deduction but itÔÇÖs still a kick in the pants.
Used AMJ for multiple moves and only had one mediocre experience with a local move (crew was kind of shitty and disorganized unloading) but there were other factors at play.

There are a few huge moving companies in Canada. Always go with the big guys. The small companies is where you will prob get the scams from.
A simple google will tell you. Look at companies with thousands of 4-5 reviews.
Also moving is not cheap at all. I got quoted $400 to move my couch 25 min across town. Moving is expensive.
Expect to pay about 6k for a truck load.
I moved from Vic, BC to Calgary with ÔÇ£Homeland MovingÔÇØ for 2600 (1bd apt) before them charging me 700 for like 4 boxes. They had fake positive reviews, look into who the reviews are posted by. Items arrived super damaged and they blamed me when they delivered an extra TV. Moving back was double the price with AMJ Campbell, but the service was amazing and everything arrived on time and without any damage. I think with moving companies, at least in my experience, you absolutely get what you pay for. $1000 for 2000 lbs is way too cheap

They’ll move you stuff and then pull the “we didnt realize how much stuff there was when we made the estimate. Gas prices went up and you have stairs. You need to pay an extra $800 or we’ll hold your stuff hostage until you pay”
If you point out thats illegal, suddenly your PC goes missing and your TV gets dropped. Now they want an additonal $400 to cover the storage of your stuff for the duration you didnt pay. But dont worry, they have insurance!
Except that insurance has a $500 deductible, doesnt cover electronics, doesnt cover items they didnt box themselves, and doesnt cover anything you didnt take photos of before hand and prove in person that it worked before moving.
Those reviews are from employees and customers coerced into leaving a positive review. The negative reviews, they petition google to remove them claiming its unfair and the user has no proof of their slander.
I used AMJ Campbell and they were extremely professional and efficient, they delivered on everything they promised. Not the cheapest but at least you know you wonÔÇÖt get scammed.
We used a sub company to AMJ Campbell. We moved from Ottawa to Invermere, BC and it was the right decision for us.
Before moving, we used MaxSold to auction off everything we didnÔÇÖt want to keep. As a result, that paid for almost all of the move with the movers. I love MaxSold and recommend them highly. Because of our decision to sell as much as we could, we on,y moved with 55 boxes of things and two chairs. (One office chair and one lawn chair) This reduced our moving cost significantly! We just bought furniture when we arrived. (We actually emergency moved from Invermere to Calgary seven weeks after moving to BC ÔÇö long story!) I donÔÇÖt regret the move west and IÔÇÖm grateful we didnÔÇÖt try to Uhaul it all ourselves. The on,y thing I would do differently is to use plastic totes to store everything instead of cardboard boxes. I stuff was squished like sardine since no one told us to pack everything in totes!

CBC Marketplace has done several stings / stories about malicious moving companies. They are all on YouTube and worth a watch.
A common tactic was having a client agree to a certain weight (let’s say 2,000 lbs). Then they call while in transit and say “we stopped to weigh this and it’s way over. You owe us another $500-$1000 or more to get this delivered.”.
Like others have said, the drop a box companies are great. We used PODS for our last move, and it was amazing. Load em up, lock it, and they appear at the new destination to be unloaded.

DonÔÇÖt use those companies they are a scam and will hold your items and demand more money. I recently moved Victoria BC- Ottawa ON. I sold my large items, then shipped the rest through canada post if you create a business account you are able to create labels for the boxes, for a large box from say Home Depot it costs around $40-50 per box very reasonable.
Transcanadamovers we used them twice. Their quote would be high but they are no BS Great service moving.

We got scammed a long ago but then again that was my parents fault they were looking for the cheapest movers. Took our money and ran
