According to the complaint, Roberts, who is white and holds a commercial policy from Progressive, received an email from the company offering grants of $25,000 each to Black-owned small business owners for the purchase of a commercial vehicle. Roberts began filling out the application, unaware that the grant was limited to Black-owned businesses, until he reached a section that made this restriction clear.

In response, Hello Alice co-founder Elizabeth Gore issued a statement defending the company’s efforts to support small minority-owned businesses. She, along with executives Carolyn Rodz and Kelsey Rudger, emphasized that Hello Alice aims to drive capital, connections, and opportunities to small businesses of all backgrounds, contrary to the allegations made.

America First legal‘s vice president and general counsel, Gene Hamilton, denounced the grant program as “offensive to the American ideal” and stated that the organization would fight to ensure the rights of all similarly situated Americans.
