Higher Energy Usage and Increasing Bills: How AI Legalese Decoder Can Help

Introduction:

I have noticed that our energy usage and accompanying bills have been steadily increasing, despite my partner and I maintaining our usual energy consumption habits. Our average monthly usage has risen from around 20 kWh to 27.8 kWh. We are currently subscribed to Powershop and benefitting from favorable rates. However, this situation is perplexing, particularly considering that a two-person household typically consumes 12.8 kWh. I am seeking guidance on how to address and reduce this growing energy usage.

Current Situation:

To provide a better understanding of our household dynamics, we are a two-person household where both individuals work from home for approximately four to five days per week. In terms of household tasks, we only do one to two loads of washing weekly, while our hot water system appears to be functioning normally. Our showers are of average length, and energy-efficient LED lights have been installed in all rooms. The only potential sources of increased energy consumption that come to mind are my partner’s gaming consoles and the presence of a turtle tank equipped with a heater. Based on rough estimates, I believe the turtle tank’s heating alone may contribute approximately $40-50 monthly to our energy bills.

How AI Legalese Decoder Can Help:

The AI Legalese Decoder can assist in unraveling the mystery surrounding our escalating energy usage. By analyzing pertinent data and decoding complex legal jargon, this advanced technology can provide helpful insights and suggestions regarding areas in which we may be able to optimize our energy consumption.

Utilizing its vast database of energy consumption norms, the AI Legalese Decoder can establish a baseline for our two-person household’s expected energy usage. This baseline can then be compared to our actual consumption, highlighting areas where we might be deviating significantly from the norm.

3. Expert Recommendations for Energy Efficiency:

Drawing on its vast knowledge base, the AI Legalese Decoder can make tailored recommendations to enhance our energy efficiency. It can suggest practical measures such as adjusting the settings on gaming consoles, exploring energy-saving options for the turtle tank heater, or recommending specific actions to optimize energy usage during home-working hours.

4. Cost Analysis and Savings Estimates:

The AI Legalese Decoder can calculate the anticipated costs and potential savings associated with various energy-saving initiatives. By estimating the financial impact of making adjustments to our energy consumption habits, we can make informed decisions on which measures to prioritize.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, our growing energy usage and bills require attention and proactive measures to identify and mitigate any unnecessary consumption. With the assistance of the AI Legalese Decoder, we can gain valuable insights and tailored recommendations to curb our energy usage. By optimizing our consumption habits and implementing the suggested energy-saving measures, we can expect to see a reduction in our bills while contributing to a more sustainable and cost-effective household.

First question- was it an actual read or an estimate?

  • culloden_spectre

Get an energy meter for your fish tank, it’ll probably show you it’s using more than your estimate.

  • db_dck

My usage was 46% lower than last year but the bill was still higher. I am with Origin energy 🙁

Households are much more efficient than 20 years ago from light bulbs to TVs and Aircon yet power bills keep rising. Total failure of govt policy.

If you’re on a basic meter, check the dials yourself to make sure the readers have read it correctly. If it’s an estimated read, they might be overestimated it by a big amount.

Contact your retailer and see if there’s any cheaper plans, check to see if you’re on demand pricing (iirc they’re more expensive) or ask if they’re able to see the usage is cyclical (usual culprits are ducted heating for high gass bills, split systems/old appliances running constantly causing high bills from elec). If you have a controlled load, try having those checked to make sure they’re not rewired to the peak meter (your retailer should see if there’s any usage on the controlled load meter)

Smart meters send through usage every 30 minutes, so you’ll be able to pinpoint where the most usage is occuring and deduce from there. If it’s a basic meter, use process of elimination and turn on one room to see how quickly the dial turns.

Also, check your bill to see if there’s any other charge that might’ve bumped up the bill eg reading fees

How often do you have heating on? ThatÔÇÖs usually a power suck.

Gamer will also do it, I had one move into our share home and our electricity shot up (he paid for the extra), but he was online for hours at a time. Around 250-300 watts/hour I reckon.

Edit to add: I was thinking of gaming PC rather than say PS5. Not sure what those use.

  • sanag

my gas usage is apparently up almost 900% since the same time last year. had all appliances checked out and there are no leaks. currently in dispute with our energy provider

  • Tezbo06

Just a side note. We had estimates for like 2 years and finally someone came out and we got a massive credit (AKA Qantas refund)

  • greatantman

If you have a electric storage hot water system that is old, this is probably the culprit. I had mine on the controlled tariff with a smart meter. It started leaking and replaced with a really cheap heat pump that I run only with the compressor. went from 6.57kWh/day average to 1.32kWh/day average. That is $840 per year saving.

    Heat pump was $1,684
    plumbing was $880
electrical was $264 (mates rates – but not a cash job)
    STC rebate was $1038.20

So it has almost paid for itself less than 2 years later.

We are in a relatively new townhouse/unit, with one unit above us. We noticed our bill quadrupled from one quarter to the next. After much troubleshooting like you’re about to do, after watching the blinking of the meters, we discovered that ours and upstairs meters were swapped, so we were getting billed for theirs and vice versa. Our bill only increased when new heat-hungry tenants moved in above, and the previous tenants were using energy similar to us so we were none the wiser. Probably not what’s happening to you but worth a brief ponder.
