You are overreacting. You probably had your password compromised and your account was protected thanks OTP. This happens a lot. Especially when you reuse the same password and email combo. No bank or website is immune. Just change your password.

  • Justa_Schmuck

It could just be a phishing attempt. It may have been a coincidence it was your bank. They’d typically spam out the more popular companies.

I’d recommend checking any computers you use with an antivirus or malware utility. It’s more likely that something could have been installed onto a device you used online banking with and they’ve taken a copy of the cookies.

Do you have any brokerage accounts or any other apps/web sites (that you authorized) that may be attempting to log into your account ?

  • MehX73

Did the OTP come with a disclaimer that if you did not attempt to login to please call their provided number asap? If so, this is a common scam. They freak you out, you call the fake number in the text instead of the banks real number, and you give up all your real bank details. I get texts like this for citizens bank all the time. I don’t have a citizens account.

Had this happen before and my bank was super helpful in being as non-helpful as the law allowed them to be. What we sussed out from the info the bank did give us was it was an Amazon web service, linked to a financial service, whom we had given our bank credentials to. After swearing we would never give such permission, we realized it was Plaid – a service related to/partnered with Venmo and Plaid is an Amazon service. We had Venmo linked to our bank account at that time. Plaid was doing an hourly peek into our bank account that day for some reason.

    We felt gross.

Not anymore. We changed all of our credentials, unlinked that account to Venmo and now use Amex Split.

Make sure your new password is a good one. I recommend combining five words chosen at random from a dictionary, but there are other ways. In any case the result for a banking website should be over 20 characters. DonÔÇÖt hesitate to write the password down in a safe place (and obviously not prefixed with ÔÇ£my Chase passwordÔÇØ).

  • RubAnADUB

what was the OTP number? just asking for a friend.

  • iRVKmNa8hTJsB7

Do you use Plaid or MX to connect your accounts anywhere else?

  • wilsonhammer

Make sure you aren’t reusing usernames or passwords for accounts

  • Content-Door5121

This happened to me a couple years ago and the bank had me change my login user name. Turns out my decades ago excitement to be able to have my very common name as my user name for the bank years ago was misplaced. Just made my accounts easy targets.

  • flowerssmellnice

Did you change your password over the phone? I just read another story like this and the phone call was still the scammer, they got the password, and drained the account

  • Commercial_Rule_7823

Fake request text or fraud attempt

    Call your bank and verify.

Some banks have log in security activity history online.

Check your log in history on your main email

  • DiddlerMuffin

I didn’t see this asked directly – do you use Mint or YNAB or something like that? Does it still have an active connection to your bank, or is it promoting for login details like a OTP?

Source: have had exactly this happen a couple times.
