I work for an independently owned retail business and my employer has cameras throughout the two retail stores and our warehouse. Nobody is doing anything wrong or trying to hide anything, but it’s quite uncomfortable to feel like you’re being watched at any given moment.

    The OIPC has guidance documents and posts decisions online. You can reach out to them for some initial questions and file a complaint through them if necessary.

    In BC the camera’s are not allowed to monitor workers unless there are special reason to do so. Their are no reasons to do so in a lunchroom.

    The employer can not use the camera’s to discipline a worker. Unless there are special circumstances.

    If your employer in anyway disciplines you for actions that they have recorded on camera in an area like a lunchroom you have to right to call them out for harassment.

    In BC harassment and bullying claims are handled by worksafebc. But this is only if they discipline you for something they have recorded outside of their legal rights.

    There were new laws about this last year. They can monitor but must tell employees about it. Check out the CFIB website. I think it still has links to the laws about it.
