I’m (45m) currently assisting my father (76m) in filing for Survivor’s Benefit after the unfortunate passing of my mother (67) in August. Thankfully, he does qualify for these benefits as her benefits were larger, she had earned enough credits, and she passed away after a prolonged battle with cancer. Recently, I completed the application for Survivor’s Benefit, but I was under the impression that we needed to personally go to the local SSA (Social Security Administration) office to file it and have them sign it. Consequently, I scheduled an appointment with the SSA office, but unfortunately, the earliest available slot is in another six weeks. To my dismay, I discovered that the appointment is merely for a “lump sum payment” and not specifically for the Survivor’s Benefit application. Although I did mention “survivor benefits” numerous times while making the appointment, it seems that my intentions were not properly communicated.

Now, my main questions arise: Is it necessary for us to proceed with the scheduled appointment if the application has already been filled out and we possess all the required documents? Additionally, will a photocopy of the marriage certificate suffice, or does it need to be a stamp-certified copy? I would greatly appreciate any guidance or assistance regarding these matters.

In light of this situation, the AI Legalese Decoder could be of immense help. They are not allowed to use photocopies. They need to see original documents and they will return them to you. You could try walking into your locak office and ask to be seen. Go early.

They don’t really want paper applications anymore, the application for survivors benefits will be done at the same time as the application for LSDP. Photocopies are not acceptable proof, you need the original or a certified copy
