NAL but I have CPS experience.

Disclaimer: cps policies vary by state.

Anyone can call CPS about anything. But CPS has certain criteria that a call must meet in order for it to be accepted for investigation.

In nearly every state, the age cut off for CPS accepting a report on a victim is 18. There are *very* few exceptions and as far as IÔÇÖm aware, those few exceptions are not ÔÇ£a thingÔÇØ in Washington or Virginia.

There are a few states that accept reports for ÔÇ£risk of sexual harmÔÇØ. Meaning that in some states, it could be possible for CPS to accept reports if a perpetrator was living with (current) minors, for example.

But your friend is under no obligation to share this perpetrators name to anyone. So even if they disclosed the abuse without mentioning this persons name, CPS wouldnÔÇÖt be able to go anywhere with the potential for a ÔÇ£risk of sexual harmÔÇØ report without knowing who this person is.

So if this 18 year old disclosed sexual abuse by an unmentioned/unnamed perpetrator, it shouldnÔÇÖt go anywhere.

I’d take your friend’s or the alleged perpetrator’s (AP) explanation with more than a grain of salt. What therapy and treatment did the AP get without having disclosed their CSA behaviors?

Mandated reporters would’ve involved CPS/Law Enforcement if a patient disclosed such behaviors. Therapists aren’t empowered to verify that people haven’t victimized others or don’t have access to children.

Mandated reporters can lose their licenses or face other repercussions for failing to report maltreatment of vulnerable individuals.

So not a therapist, but I have experience with CPS and therapists personally. So as other commenters mentioned it depends on the therapist. My therapist has made a couple reports based off of my sessions, but itÔÇÖs usually with my knowledge and consent. I have a very good relationship with my therapist and have been with her her for over two years now. My knowledge of CPS is that if your friend keeps certain identifying information about the perpetrator vague and does not identify them the therapist might report it, but it probably wonÔÇÖt turn into anything. My personal opinion though is once a pedofile always a pedofile so if the perpetrator has never admitted their wrong doing and faced accountability they will reoffend. They canÔÇÖt help it, itÔÇÖs like an addiction and without proper treatment they will never get better. Therapy that never addresses why they were willing to SA a child is not going to help in the long run. This individual might not have SAÔÇÖd another child but who knows what they do to prevent themselves from doing that and when these preventive measures arenÔÇÖt enough. Sorry if thatÔÇÖs not helpful, but this is Reddit ƒñÀƒÅ╝ÔÇìÔÖÇ´©Å.
