## Inventory and Supply for New Cars

Has anyone heard about the availability of new car inventory and supply? I’ve been driving my beloved 20-year-old Corolla, but sadly, she has succumbed to car cancer with significant rust. My spouse has strongly suggested that it’s time to replace it, most likely with a hatchback Civic.

It does make sense not to risk the safety of our kids by driving them around in a rusted car with questionable structural integrity. However, I can’t shake the feeling that I could possibly extend the life of my Corolla for another year if there are better pricing, financing options, and inventory on the horizon.

I wonder if the AI Legalese Decoder could help me navigate through the process of finding the best deals and options for purchasing a new car. With its ability to simplify complex legal jargon and provide clear explanations, it could assist me in making informed decisions about buying a new vehicle.

Can’t say much about inventory other than anecdotally hearing that certain dealers are filling up their lots again these days…

    (Edit: here’s a link as well: https://nationalpost.com/news/canada/car-market-price-drop)

Non-finance comment feel free to ignore:

    > dubious structural integrity

imho the issue is not a 20 year old car literally somehow falling apart on you, it’s what happens in an impact. Crash structures and safety have taken big steps in just a couple generations after your car. A 2018 vs a 2004 is probably night and day in terms of reducing serious injuries or death in many types of impacts. I get people wanting to save money holding onto old cars, but I feel like it’s not always considered to factor in spending some money on improved safety in terms of ones life-strategy. Getting a used car into the late teens for example. I know used car costs unfortunately went up post-pandemic, and I know some simply can’t afford it. Anyway back to safety, my non-educated gut feeling is that improvements in car safety finally starting to flatten out like a logarithmic curve. Vehicle sizes on NA roads are increasing in size, more and more people on cell phones. Call it extra life insurance lol.

I think new car prices are coming down.
Google it, but I read somewhere on Auto trader or Ken website that shows new car price trends.

Market and inventory will probably be better to some degree.

But this decision to me seems like it errs more on the personal vs finance side.

Are you more willing to increase the safety to your family and yourself and accept the earlier $ spent on a new car? Or are you willing to try and save a bit of $ but accept the risk to your family if a bad collision occurs?

To me it’s an easy decision but you have to understand and assess your situation and priorities.

If you’re going to go Civic I’d at least wait for the hybrid release in a few months.

Definitely better than last year. My comparison is a 2017 Mazda CX-5 with 120k km. Last year those were 21-22k, just saw a few postings for 17-18k.

Take the Corolla to a mechanic and get them to inspect it for structural rust concerns. It doesn’t make sense to worry about that issue if it’s not a real safety problem and if it is you want to stop driving that car ASAP. Either way a few bucks spent finding out is worth it.
