“Hi, I haven’t looked at the place, but I want to pay less rent than you are asking. When can I come view?”

How do you think that’s likely to impact on your chances?

Do this – list something on Marketplace that people would want to buy. Anything.

Now wait a day and see how annoying it gets.

YouÔÇÖre allowed to negotiate but the power is with the property owners not renters. ThereÔÇÖs always a renter who is willing to pay more out of fear of being homeless.

Worst case is that you get your application tossed, best case is that they agree.

Unsure if there current market means you have more power. There have been some overpriced rentals on trademe for months on end now – I assume those may be more open to negotiation. But then again those owners are probably less likely to want to negotiate.

  • stonetempleparrots

People are usually offering to pay more rent to stand out from other applicants. I think itÔÇÖs too competitive to negotiate for lower rent, and you will probably go straight to the bottom of the pile.

  • kiwimuz

It would make the impression that you may be a difficult tenant so would more than likely not be rented to.

    You can try,

I have done it before successfully. But it depends on how tight the market is, what type of other applicants they get and what your credentials are as tenants. Most of the time it doesnt work but I have successfully negotiated rent down before on making an enquiry.

You can. But don’t be surprised if you’re blacklisted by the PM company

  • lsohtfal

    View the apartment first.

If its been listed a while, more than a couple of weeks, then I think you could negotiate, particularly if you look like you’re going to be a long term tenant. Landlord might be happy to drop the rent like $20 a week than having it empty for another 3 weeks.

Think of it like tinder. That question is the equivalent of the fat chick/guy who says she’s 10 years younger than she/he is.

  • No_Positive6484

I thought rent negotiation was made illegal to stop rent bidding.
