## Situation Overview

Hello,

We are currently receiving Supplemental Security Income (SSI) and have Section 8 housing assistance. Our case worker recently informed us that our child receiving SSI may affect our Section 8 voucher eligibility and may result in an increase in our rent. This news came as a surprise to us, and if this is indeed the case, it seems we may not be in compliance with the program’s regulations.

## Expanded Content

We were taken aback by the information shared by our case worker regarding the potential impact of our child’s SSI benefits on our Section 8 voucher. This unforeseen development has raised concerns about our compliance with the program’s guidelines. We are unsure about the specifics of how the SSI benefits received by our child could influence our housing assistance and potentially lead to a rent increase. It has left us feeling uncertain about our current situation and the implications it may have on our housing stability.

    Yes, it definitely does.

    Yes, all income counts.

How long has your child been receiving SSI, and how long have you been in Section 8?

You would owe backpay. So if you’ve been in section 8 for several years, you’d owe the back pay for what you should have paid if the income was on file for all that time, but if you can’t pay that much you could lose your voucher and eventually your housing.

This is something that you would have to speak with your case manager about to attempt repayments or payment plans. But for the future, ALL income needs to be reported for things like that.

What is the worst case scenario for us now? Since we never reported it not intentionally only because I assumed under 18 means it’s not counted. Also we did mark on our evaluation documents that we have one disabled member in our home and is receiving ssi. It also shows on our bank statement. Our case worker said our bank statement is not proof of ssi income. I’m worried now 🫠😩
