Less than 120 months is also fine if you

    1. acquire(d) the remaining months in a country with which Japan has bilateral social security agreements (eg. US, CA, AU, BR, IN, PH, several EU countries+CH) regardless where you will retire. In particular, duty or university education also counts under some of those agreements.

    2. voluntarily pay the remaining contributions.

When you contribute to Kosei Nenkin, you’re simultaneously contributing to Kokumin Nenkin at the same time. So basically you need 120 months (10 years) of Kokumin Nenkin contributions to claim a Japanese pension in retirement. (Edit: if we forget about totalization agreements, and if someone is *legally* maintaining their PR SOR while residing outside Japan, because PRs can get Japanese pension even without 120 months)

So in retirement You’d then get an annuity represented in the value of 120 months Kokumin + a calculation of your Kosei Nenkin based on your ASR for all Kosei Nenkin months, and however many months you paid into that (even if less than 120 months actually paid into Kosei Nenkin)
