Introduction:
I recently discovered the possibility of opening a TD Ameritrade account even while residing abroad as a US citizen, thanks to the invaluable support of this amazing community. On the hopeful side, I know a few people here with schwab accounts (me, too), who you might say were grandfathered in–had the accounts (early 2000s) before their policy on new accounts from here changed. So I’ll guess you’ll be able to keep your account–I can’t imagine they would do some kind of mass closing.

That said, they probably value investment accounts (higher balances, ETFs/stocks, maybe some trading) over those with low balances, little/no investment activity, and just casual light banking.

Two of the most useful objects for American expats are a USA address and phone number. There are several digital nomad services that offer both. My Schwab account works fine that way.

Nobody knows. I asked this question of TDA’s customer service and they said they cannot predict the future.

Hopefully TDA would not open new accounts for overseas US taxpayers if they knew Schwab would not allow them. Even if it will allow them now though Schwab may change its mind.
